Random brown stains on chino type trousers after washing

I am getting random brown/rust coloured stains on various garments but principally chino type trousers after going through the washing machine cycle. This just happens occasionally, but it makes the clothes virtually unwearable. Can anybody help me to identify them? It has happened in a new washing machine as well as in our old one.

At a guess, without seeing it and considering it’s on two machines, it has to be a use thing, no other possibility really and my top contender would be a variation of this…

Could be something else but, it’s certainly a use thing.

Thanks, K, the stains aren’t greasy, so we’re still in the dark.

Yes it may appear that they are not but, that can still be the cause.

Anything that is on the clothing can attract dirt or whatever in the wash and hold onto it, thereby creating the stain.
