Whilst replacing the brushes I noticed a round magnet sat in the base of the machine, pretty sure it wasn’t there when I removed the brushes. I had just removed the hose to the pump, but I don’t think it had fallen from there as it was clean and dry. The magnet is about the size of a penny. Any ideas? Washer is a Siemens WM6127BGB (about 18yrs old).

Sounds like the tacho magnet from the back of the motor has come off.

Ken sound like he is bang on look at the picture of the motor I have added
magnet should be under the cover indicated.
it should not be loose enough to fall off so if its not damaged put a little glue onto it as you put it back. use something like Evostik or bostik not superglue as you have more time to get it positioned and you wont stick your fingers together. let it dry before you start to use it for washing
if the magnet is not there the motor speed will be uncontrollable so the unit will spin on wash

Thank you for the replies. The washing machine has already been a test run and seems fine. I’ve looked at the motor and the cover indicated is in place. Have also Googled and images suggest that a tacho magnet would have a hole in it, this magnet doesn’t.

The magnet does not come from any component in your machine. It must have been there some time and left by someone that had previous reason to access the internal workings for whatever reason. 😕
