I was asked some time ago and, dismissed it at the time in all honesty, about oven cleaning services. You know the ring them up and get your oven cleaned affairs that we see banded about. Anyways, I got to thinking that this could, for some anyway, be a lucrative little sideline especially after reading up a bit about it on various forums as owners seem to adore the service and seeing the money that is charged.

    Example pricing is like this:

Standard Width Appliances and Ovens(Usually ~60cm)
    Hobs £15.00
Extractors £15.00 including free replacement filter
Single Oven £40.00 including two racks
Double Oven £50.00 including three racks
(Double Oven = Main oven with a separate grill/oven section)
    Extra Racks/Shelves £2.00 Grill Pans/Trays £3.00

    Microwaves £18.00

90 cm Width Single Oven Ranges
    Range Hood or Hob £18.00
Single Wide Oven £46.00 (racks extra)
    Extra Range Racks/Trays £3.00
    Warming Drawer Door £7.00
Complete Range £79.00 including standard racks & trays

Double Oven Ranges or 100 cm (or wider) Width Ranges
    Hood or Hob £23.00
    Large Oven £40.00
    Range 1/2 size Oven £18.00
    Extra Range Racks/Trays £3.00
Complete Range £103.00 including standard racks & trays

    AGA (Alpha,Stanley,Rayburn)
    2 Oven Size £89.00
    4 Oven Size £119.00
    Side Module £65.00

    All prices include VAT

Then I’m thinking, well if you added that or slightly less to the price of a service call as you’re there anyway, it’s a damn good pay for a couple of hours worth of work.

If there’s enough interest I’d look into it a bit more but I’ve no idea what you guys would think of using your time to clean an oven would be.

Or I can just look at the companies that do it as an advertising opportunity. 😉

Do you remember Matt830 back in November?

Well Matt actually runs a part-time business cleaning ovens in the Basingstoke area. From what I recall of some of the conversation Matt and I had, he says that oven cleaning requires the necessity for an ‘acid bath?’ to be carried on the van I believe? Removeable oven glasses, catalytic liners and wire racks etc are immersed in some toxic substance to clean them like new apparently?

A bit like these guys that go around the streets jet washing wheelie bins, you’ve gotta have the right gear. 😉

Yeah, that’s what I don’t know, how they do it.

Some seem to use a vat, which I used to do when reconning as well, but there’s no way that a Kangoo which many use would accommodate that. Just the weight would kill a small van.

Dunno just a thought and a couple of people asked.

I have done enough recons in my time not to want to do it again, especially the way customers are now.

For the two businesses to work hand in hand advertising each other would be good. I am allways getting asked about cleaning them and it would be nice to work on a clean one.

Thing is customers may get upset if we hand them a “clean your oven” flyer after we repair it. You know what they are like sometimes. Having said that I do get asked about cleaning services occasionaly, guess we could play it by ear. Wouldnt fancy the job myself though.

Well I was kinda thinking along those lines myself Mark, but I said I’d ask, so I asked.

But then I have a nasty habit of stringing a strategy together before opening my mouth on many things and I have some thoughts, but I’ll have to think it over some more.
