ParticipantHi i wonder if anyone can help…my dryer was just over a year old i put some washing in and turned the timer to required time when all my electrics went off…i ran downstairs and flipped the trip switch back on…turned the dryer on again and the same thing happened…well a friend came round took the lid off and sprayed all the connections to the timer with WD 40…hey presto it worked…and did for quite a few months…the same thing is now happening again…my friend came back and tried the WD40 trick again but no luck…everytime i turn the timer it trips all the electrics…would it be worth buying a new timer switch…any advice would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

The first thing you can do is keep your friend well away from the machine, you should never spray WD40 into the controls. :rolls:
You need to get someone (who knows what they are doing) with the correct electrical test equipment to identify the component causing this. It is far more likely to be the heating element, almost certainly not the timer.
If you do not have access to a test meter or the knowledge to use one then you could try the link below to see if we have someone in your area that can help.
I will add once again. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SPRAY THE CONTROLS WITH WD40. It can lead to contacts within the controls sticking and shorting out.

Hi Jim
My son is an electrician so has a test meter but the chances of getting him here to have a look is very slim…he is always busy….do you think it would be worth getting someone in to have a look…the only thing i am worried about is how much it will cost….and wonder if i should just buy a new one and have done with it.
I wont let my friend use the WD40 again… many thanks for your helpJune 7, 2007 at 1:36 pm #216162iadom

The heater assembly can sometimes just need drying out with a hair dryer. then the float chamber may also need a clean to prevent moisture from being blown onto the heater. The machine is covered for all parts for five years. Even if you have to rely on Hotpoint you will only have to pay the labour, rather high at just under £90.00 but you are not going to buy a new dryer for that price. Even a complete new heating element is not that expensive, a local independent may well be cheaper.
Jim.
PS. Whenever my dear departed mother had a problem I was round to fix it at once. Nobody is busy enough to neglect their mum. 😉

Hi Jim
I need your help again with my dryer :rolls: after speaking to you last i could not decide on buying a new one or getting this one fixed…so after a week of it just sitting there doing nothing i thought i would give it a try….it worked properly 😀 and did right up till last week 🙁 The problem is slightly different this time…the dryer still goes round but just wont get hot at all :rolls: does this mean the heater has gone completely?
My son never managed to get round with his test meter…you gotta laugh 😆
Many thanks

Thermostats the likeliest cause, again the only way to be certain is to check them with proper test equipment.
