Here’s a thing that strikes me as a bit off leading on from the various discussions about recalls and fires…

Why is it that none of these are notified to the independent trade?

I’ve never had formal notification of a recall in my puff from anywhere and, given that UKW has been on the go for almost a decade it isn’t exactly unknown as well as being an easy way to reach a lot of the indie trade and pretty highly ranked for appliance related matters online. The only way I find out is when either I get told on the QT or I spot it in a media source, is it any wonder you get the impression that it could be that these things would rather be buried?

Even the trade associations aren’t notified.

Most of the guys are in people’s homes every day where the appliances are and can often at least identify the machine and advise customers that there is a recall on the appliance. Even if they either cannot are not permitted to carry out any modification or rectification work.

I’d have thought that this would have been common sense.

Having said that, given that there are a number of manufacturers that completely shun the independent repair trade I don’t suppose that too many independents would be falling over themselves to do some of them any favours. Like Bosch, as an example, who don’t help anyone with technical et all. So maybe they’re a bit embarrassed to ask for help when it’s needed the other way around.

But, when you think about it, there’s about 1500-2000 trade accounts on here and, even if there’s only half that actively out in the field that’s at least five calls a day on average to be pessimistic times, seven hundred and fifty times five calls a day, five days a week, times forty eight is at least 900,000 visits to homes a year. That’s a lot of visits and a very pessimistic number by people who have at least half a clue what they’re looking at.

What are they not actively made aware? Seems to me, that’s a little remiss.

    Re: Recall Notifications

Purely based on the amount of products sold that are subject to recall mods, and we are talking in the 100,000’s, then the sheer scale of the COST must be reason. Therefore these manufacturers are shown to be honouring their duty of care by publishing their recall notices whilst all the while hoping few will respond and expenditure kept to a minimum. Taking the BSH recall as a ‘for instance’ then the cost to them must be massive and they recon only 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} have been modified (thereabouts).

Flag waving by independents may drag in a few more respondents perhaps but would also bring about more negative propaganda against the manufacturer. Confusion over which products are affected would morph down the line to appear as if ALL their products are faulty. Here on UKW we are coming up to the 2nd anniversary of the BSH recall and I wouldn’t mind betting half the trade guys on here haven’t a scooby as to how to find out if the dishwasher they are booked to fix tomorrow is on the recall list?

Have you noticed that since the recent press and TV coverage about the Beko fires Beko have run a major TV, press and magazine advertising promo on their products. A sort of ‘smoke screen’ to cover bad news with good. 😉

    Re: Recall Notifications

The brands are no different to any other business, they have wages to pay and sales/profits to protect.

If I started slagging of ISE appliances on here, giving examples or poor reliability, quality & admin, stock sent when you no longer are a dealer etc etc I’m sure I’ll be slagged off, told I’m wrong and brought into line.

Yes Ken is pretty sharp at that and adds them to the news section. A few days ago I posted about the Hoover fridge recallwhich Ken spotted and added to the public forums. 😀

If you look at the Electrical Safety Council website, there is a set of pges that lists product recalls for most types of electrical products.

http://www.esc.org.uk will get you to the front page.
