Hello, I did see this question has been asked in the past but not for many years so I wanted to ask for some advice on this.

I’ve just bought my first flat and it’s really small, tiny little kitchen, which courtesy of the previous owner had a broken Amica under counter fridge which I now need to get rid of – anyway, I have decided to cut the work top so that I can fit a fridge freezer in there, as i do appreciate a nice amount of freezer space. It’s just me living here, but very into food and like to stock up. Budget is low, around £300.

I tend to research the absolute •••• out of everything I buy and overthink everything, but not having a fridge for over a week, I’m starting to get fed up.

I’ve looked at most of the < 50cm options out there, Bush, IKEA, Russell Hobbs, Fridgemaster, Beko, Logic, Cookology, etc as far as I can tell they are all rebranded stuff. I've noticed for example, that IKEA Lagan is the same as Bush M50142FFW, or that a Fridgemaster MTM48120MF is the same as a Zanussi ZTAN14FW0 (with huge price differences!)

All that aside, is there a preferred brand here? Is there something that one of you experts can recommend? Something that will offer maximum reliability and hassle free operation, good spares availability, for my meagre budget?

    Thanks!

Sadly none of the main stream manufacturers produce 50cm any more as there just isn’t enough demand. Personally I am not keen on the likes of Fridgemaster and Bush as I have seen enough of them written off at an early age!!

The Zanussi and Beko you mention are both top mount ( freezer on top) only a small space, whereas you like a good sized freezer as mentioned. The only other appliance I can recommend as it has a two year warranty is the Montpellier MFF1545W frost free with three freezer baskets.

hiya, thanks for your input. so what about something like:

i’m not looking at those mini fridge / freezers with the top mount, as the freezers are too small. i’m looking at things like this:

    https://ao.com/product/rh50ff145-russell-hobbs-fridge-freezer-white-93756-28.aspx

    or this ikea one

    https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/lagan-fridge-freezer-freestanding-white-60494857/

which is has a five year warranty, and is the same as this Bush M50142FFW with over 600 5* reviews:

    any thoughts?

Out of those I would go with the Ikea one as it has a five year warranty, so you know you will hopefully get that much life from it.

That said I looked at the guarantee page to see if what exclusions there might be and found the info here which states the following “How long is the guarantee valid? This guarantee is valid for 5-years for an IKEA appliance from IKEA. LAGAN and TILLREDA appliances have a 2-year guarantee. If service work is carried out under guarantee, this will not extend the guarantee period for the appliance, or for the new parts. What is covered under this guarantee? This guarantee covers faults in the appliance, which have been caused by faulty construction or material faults from the date of purchase from IKEA or delivery by IKEA if later. This guarantee applies to domestic use only. The exceptions are specified under the heading “What is not covered under this guarantee?” Within the guarantee period, the costs of remedying the fault, e.g. repairs, parts, labour and travel for the IKEA engineer or service provider, will be covered, provided that the appliance is accessible for repair without special expenditure. Under these conditions the EU guidelines (Nr. 99/44/EG) and the respective local regulations are applicable. Replaced parts become the property of IKEA. Which appliances are covered under this guarantee? The 5-year guarantee is valid for all IKEA appliances, except for LAGAN and TILLREDA appliances, which have a 2-year guarantee. Conditions for the guarantee These guarantees are valid from the date of purchase or delivery date if later. The original purchase receipt, or email confirmation is required as proof of purchase.”

I would clarify the guarantee as described on the product page and get it in writing.

yeah.. i saw that too, it says 2 years for that one, yet on the product page says 5 years.. i will check with them..

edit: yeah, just called them up.. five year guarantee on that one. all the other lagan appliances are just two but this fridge definitely has a five year guarantee. that’s quite generous isn’t it. i really like the styling of it and am a huge ikea fan. so i might just go for that one just for the guarantee. sensible?
