    An elderly relative needs a new freestanding gas cooker and we need advice about reliable brands.

    The cooker must be freestanding because of the kitchen design and must be gas because although the electrics in his house are safe they date back to a much older spec and he isn’t able to cope with having the house rewired. A qualified electrician advised that it isn’t really worth the hassle and cost at this time of life.

    What we’re looking for is
    * a freestanding gas cooker about 60cm wide but definitely less than 70cm

    * decent build quality, so probably £500 to £600 range but we could be persuaded up or down

    * the top cavity to be both a grill (ideally variable) and second oven, ideally with a glass door and a light but these are ideals not essentials

    * it’s ok if the grill function is electric rather than gas

    * ideally a built-in minute-minder / timer but this isn’t essential

    I have read the advice on this excellent website.
    I did look through the buying advice forum but didn’t find a suitable thread. I hope I didn’t miss one.
    I did find these excellent general guides

    and

    I see from these that the German brands are top quality but Miele, Liebherr, and the Siemens group don’t seem to make freestanding cookers at all let alone gas ones.

    Reviews I’ve seen about the Stoves / Belling / Newworld group suggest they can be quite flimsy though it’s impossible to tell how heavy handed the reviewers are. Some of them are fond of all caps. We’ve seen too many bad reports about Whirlpool and Beko.

    So does that only leave us with the Electrolux group?

    I have looked at Gorenje but they only seem to make freestanding single ovens. The kitchen is a bit too small for a standalone grill.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

    The Zanussi range is pretty good as are the Cannon models. Just remember you will not get the build quality that you used to get as the prices are cheaper.
