For those who still do these, what guarantees do you give?.I only do reconditioning of washers and fridges, and not so long back i could hardly keep up.I give 3 or 6 month guarantee on parts and labour. Now new machines are down in price should i give 6 or 12 month guarantees to compeat

If we install them, 6 months guarantee.

If the customer/landlord installs them, 3 month guarantee!

Don’t mean to be nosey, but that seems a bit harsh. As long as an IG claim isn’t related to installation problems why should they miss out on 3 months guarantee?

    Re: recons

I would give everything a 3 month guarantee; but when we install a machine, I’m confident that it has been delivered and installed with the correct amount of TLC 😉

Beside, the customers that buy recons won’t take this as an answer…

“It’s an installation fault, I’ll have to charge you!”

I was advised by the Office of Fair trading that I have to give 6 months warranty on s/h goods, which makes things tricky on your cheap and cheerful option. 🙁

Exactly, ‘advised’. I’ve got some advice for the office of fair trade, actually 😉

    Re: recons

What’s wrong with giving 6 months? I’m not trying to be trouble causing but surely a recon done by a UKW member would rarely fail between 3 and 6 months? Are you selling them to really poor people who won’t pay much for them – is that the problem?

    Re: recons

For us its the margins – With new machines available from Tesco @£100 then in this area second-hand will at best reach £85. I appreciate that the customer gets sold in general a better machine but when costing out their budget they look at the cheapest appliance not the most expensive. Then lets take the parts and the amount of time taken to fix and install it. Roll it all together and if you make thirty quid you have done well. Hardly worth the bother.

    Re: recons

I should like to say that we have always given six month g/tee on recon w/m’s but just wanted to make the point that it would now appear that we are obliged to do so. Recon prices have come back from £180, £150, £120 any less and they no longer are viable when warranties and VAT take any profit away. It is on the cheap s/h fridge or freezer that someone wants for the garage or the fishing bait that it also makes awkward. Money back is perhaps the quick loss option.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. To be honest I’m amazed anyone still does “recons”, and if you can’t get more than £80 – £100 for them I understand why you’d be reluctant to guarantee them for long. At £80 I’d feel bitter enough to only want to give ’em 1 month.

I stopped over 10 years ago when I used to sell them for £199 and as high as £250 with 12 month guarantees. But at that time they were still a lot cheaper than a new one and I did fit a hell of a lot of parts to them including a new control panel, door trim, armature, door seal, drain hose and anything else required on each one. Those days are gone for ever.

At the end of the day they aren’t a viable thing to sell any more unless you can recon a quality machine. At least then you can sell them on the premise that they may be close to the price of a new one but are much better quality and could or even should last just as long.

    Re: recons

The £100 washer is an irrelivant point, I think :tomato: Even the £180 Servis or other cheap makes.

Customers know that they can buy a £200 cheap, nasty make. But the people that buy re-cons from me, know that the 7 year old Zanussi I’m selling for £125 will last longer than a cheap new machine.

So I get landlords looking for old cheap workhorses, and then I get people that can’t afford a £300+ machine but also don’t want a cheap new machine.

    Re: recons

30 years ago I used to recon autos and twin tubs. I would fit all new trims, knobs, hoses, facia’s, pumps, etc, and give a 12 month guarantee. We would also have all the cabinets completely resprayed at a local car resprayer. It made the machines look like new, and we couldn’t keep up with demand. Happy days.
