Red stains on black garments – Hotpoint WMA56P

Been getting reddish/rust/maroonish coloured stains, particularly on black clothing; don’t know whether problem is with water, machine or detergent/softener. We are in Nuneaton (softish water – e.g. only traces of limescale in kettle), normally use Ariel Biological and Comfort softener. We’re not sure whether the stains are permanent or are being “replaced” with new ones next time the garment is washed.

Any pointers to ending this irritating problem gratefully received.

Metallic object under drum or in filter can cause this; drum bearings failing can do it as well – is the machine getting noisier, especially on spin?
