I managed to pierce the side of the small freezer compartment in my fridge (a newish small Proline model) while trying to free the frozen-shut compartment door, and some gas escaped.
I got away from the gas straight away, opened all the windows and got the kitchen extractor fan running.
Do you know if any of the sealed food that was in the fridge at the time will be safe to handle or eat?
There’s a smell of something not unlike diesel on some of the things that were in the fridge. I’d bin the whole lot straight away as a precaution, but there was upwards of £30 worth of food in the fridge at the time, my entire weekly shop.

    Hi Mandy

Sorry but you have just wiped out your new fridge.it will be uneconomical to be repaired. You have two options to either purchase a new one or claim of your house insurance if you have accidental damage.Either way it would be cheaper to buy a new one due to increased premiums.

Thanks… 🙁 I had a feeling it was dead, although the fridge part was still staying cold. Now unplugged with everything removed.
How urgent is it to move the fridge? There’s a pretty strong smell (oil?) but I’m two floors up, have steep stairs, and arthritis, so it’s going to be a nightmare if I have to lug out out myself today

    Hi

there isnt any reason to move the appliance until you have the new one delivered and then they can take the old one away.Just make sure its left unpluged.

the “diesel” smell is probably the oil that was sealed in with the gas…I’d wash or wipe the packaging with a damp loth and some detergent.
The amount involved is unlikely to pose any risk.
If you’ve unloaded the machine and unplugged it, leave the door(s) OPEN

If you close it up, it’ll get VERY smelly, VERY quickly.
