I’ve asked Cockney Steve to pull this post:

Kimand, you’re really out of your depth here…I’ve run a fish and chip business for several years, as well as having an electrical/electronics/mechanical engineering background (and, yes, i’m multi-talented in the building trades too, including plastering!
you really should visit your local library and get an elementary study-book out on your chosen subject.
Refrigeration isn’t rocket-science, neither is AC motor technology.
The fridge compressor is a sealed unit…the gas is compressed till it liquifys…the liquid goes to the bit inside the fridge….turns back to gas, cooling the fridge in the process.
It does not , of itself, “blow up”or “explode”Your “magic cord” is not “magic” at all it could kill you
If not from your ignorant fiddling with 240V….then food-poisoning or botulism.
K watt has already told you:-
FOOD NEEDS A STABLE TEMPERATURE at around 5 or6*
LISTEN TO GOOD ADVICE!
if you had been systematic with your “playing” you would have found out exactly what the “klixon” device was, what it did, and probably deduced why it failed……you would also realised the function of the capacitor and the operation of the start-circuit. the Cap is not there for decoration! if it’s dud..REPLACE IT! likewise the Klixon!messing with switching start/run windings manually is a recipe for disaster.
HINT…you can SEARCH on the internet.I would suggest you use the function at the bottom of the page to locate an engineer.
Fiddling and bodging is not an option for you so DO NOT begrudge paying another engineer for his professional opinion.
Sorry, I had a strop on behalf of the forum owners…..it tees me off when someone tries to help and the enquirer ignores advice or is too lazy to learn the basics of self-help first.
IMO you should steer well clear of this American bodge…fire risk/shock/injury risk/food poisoning risk..pay a proper repairer OR learn “how it works” before fiddling further.
from THIS thread.
Very worthy, but it’s just dragging trouble back to the top and there have been enough idiots in that forum this week already.

KeymasterI guess, it just was nice to see a member of the public telling another that they were an idiot and to listen to what we were telling them which was, in effect, pretty much all it said.
