KeymasterHi there. I have a Samsung American fridge freezer which about a year ago had a problem when an ice build up caused the fan on the fridge side to stop operating. An engineer removed the inside back pannel and defrosted it with a hair dryer! It has happened again so thought I would do the same. However I cannot remove the lower inside back panel (below the lighting panel) as it is held in place by hidden clips (or black magic), indicated by little arrows. Anyone know how to release these? Many thanks.

Remove the top light panel by removing the three screws. Remove the two small vent covers and undo the screws behind them. Remove the two bottom screws behind the water bottle (if fitted). Warm the edges of the back panel with a hair dryer to stop the cold plastic from cracking and then it is just a case of trying to get your finger in one of the top corners and pulling towards you. be very careful as it comes away as the fan motor cables to the sockets are quite short.
Please make sure the appliance is unplugged before you work on it. :zap:March 19, 2005 at 6:30 am #129220admin

Or switch it off for 24hours with the fridge door open and allow it to defrost on its own, no fuss.

TVM for your replies. I would never have thought of that hair dryer tip! Fridge is working again now… in future I will defrost evey 6 months or so.
Cheers

I also have a Samsung F/F (SR2028FSM) that has stopped working on the fridge side. I am going to try the defrost trick to see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!
Samsung – who have the worst customer service ever – fixed the machine once but it stopped working about two months afterwards.
There is obviously some design flaw if this keeps happening. Does anyone know of a way of permanently avoiding the ice build-up without having to manually defrost every couple of months? Thanks.

If it keeps icing up then there is either a fault with the defrost cycle (engineer required), the door is being left open accidently or the insulation has a fault.
The first is the most likely, if it works ok after defrost and happens again, come back and ask or check the repairs@ function for an engineer 😀

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply!
The original engineer apparently replaced a pcb board but to my mind I would imagine that the problem is, as you say, with the auto-defrosting.
I was loathe to get an engineer out again if the problem was just going to repeat itself but if a permanent repair can be effected that is a different matter. Do you think it is fixable permanently?
I’ll report back shortly.

hi,
fraid frosting of the defrost drain channel is going to happen, no matter what you do. The only thing to do is to defrost it. There is a fix which can be adapted to fix many manufacturers appliances, but its unofficial and is for System engineers only.Kevin

Kevin, Dave – Thanks to both of you for your helpful responses!
Well I defrosted the fridge side and the temperature in there is a steady 14C at the sensor level. However it does feel colder at the bottom of the fridge. Freezer temperature is a steady -20C so no problem there. So it would seem that the compressor is fine.
I ran the self-diagnostic test and the error code indicated “Motor fan in refrigerator” issue. The fan was making a rattling noise previosuly so I am guessing that it has burnt out as it got slowly more frozen.
I think now I am going to need an engineer to –
a) Replace the fan motor
b) Do the system fix for the defroster that Kevin discussed (I must say I am surprised that the drain channel isn’t heated by design to prevent ice build-up).Do you concur guys?
Anyone cover the London E14 area to do this?

Thanks Dave.
I’ve given Bryan a call to book an appointment.

Most of them do have a combined drain heater for the drain hole.
Where the ice builds up around the fan motor it can be cured once and for all but it is engineer only.October 30, 2006 at 5:29 pm #129230joesan

Weirdjam or others. For some reason Bryan and I didn’t manage to meet up and look at the Samsung.
Does anyone know how to contact Bryan or any other engineer (Canary Wharf area) who can make the fix that Weirdjam suggests?

Private message to “r600a” should do the trick.
