Hiya – I have a Lamona extractor cooker hood unit (LAM2401 Lamona 60cm Std Chimney Extractor) whose motor appears to have failed after 10 years of service – can anyone tell me if whether it’s most cost effective to have the motor replaced or if it’s better to have the whole unit including hood replaced?

Although the unit switches on, it has got very loud and has no suction pressure. The hood unit is piped in with an external vent (as apposed to a carbon filter set-up) and I’ve confirmed that the external vent isn’t blocked.

As well as the motor failing, the light on one side fails regularly so probably some of the wiring harness in the extractor needs looked at as well.

It has never sucked particularly well (lol) even though it’s rated at 350m3 for a 28m3 room assuming the rule of thumb about 10x room capacity is correct.

Any views on whether it would be most cost effective to replace the motor – perhaps with a more powerful one or get a new unit entirely?

You’d only be able to replace like for like in terms of the motor, you won’t have any options but the motor is nil stock everywhere with no ETA being given and is the best part of £70 so, that may make the decision for you.

Thanks kwatt. Does that mean if I got Pacifica Group in to do the work that they would be unable to complete the repair because they couldn’t source the fan unit/motor (I guess this would be replaced as a entire part, not seperately). Or would they likely have better access to spares?

I have no idea, I can only report what I can see and I have no idea if they have the part/s or not to do it.

Actually I may have fixed it. The extractor is set up to vent the air outside the building. However I found that the installers had fitted carbon filters! These have been in there since 2016… With them gone the unit is now venting again.
