    Re: Replacing Hotpoint bearings

    Hi again

well i looked last night and as i thought could see nothing obvious, i did however find a black plastic cover on the floor under the machine, i couldnt work out where it should go, but it did look as if it were to cover the motor.

It still squeaks very annoyingly when washing, however its quiet on a spin.

I told her to buy a new one, there was a second hand miele machine in our local free ads this week for £120. So a repair is not an option.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, i bought a very cheap washing machine a Candy infact from a wholesaler about 5 years ago now and touch wood, the machine has been brilliant, coped with overloading, use every day, trainers, horse blankets etc. So not everything cheap is rubbish. and the cycle times are not horrendusly long either.

Thanks for all your help guys, this site is brilliant, keep up the good work

    Re: Replacing Hotpoint bearings

    Hi everyone

Just thought i would tag my question on the back of this thread as we have the same model washing machine WMT03 – 01120395. I can safely assume that it will not be covered by any warranty.

My question is the drum has stopped spinning altogether. It may do half a cycle/turn but then cannot turn anymore. (If turned by hand or on a cycle)

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? Can this be repaired and if so is it worth it?

If not what advice does anyone have on a replacement? (Broad question I know)

    Kind regards,

    Camilla

    Re: Replacing Hotpoint bearings

Has the machine been very noisy for some time on final spin?

If you cannot turn it by hand then the bearings and shaft may already be to badly damaged to get away with a simple bearing repair.

You would almost certainly need a drum rear half & drum spider/shaft.

The Indesit Company do have a maximum repair charge for machines over five years old.

Unless you are prepared to spend £400 upwards for a decent new machine then that might be your best option.

Was the machine getting noisy before the drum stopped turning? When you lift the inner drum inside the door does it feel loose and move independently of the outer drum? If yes to either of these questions it is likely to be bearings and iadom comments apply.

If not then is a possibility something has got stuck between the drums.Try looking through the holes in the drum with a small torch, sometimes it’s possible to see if something got in there.

If you can’t see anything then turn the drum, when it does move does it feel smooth before it stops again or is it rough and noisy?
When you turn the drum to where it stops will it turn back again freely?

    Re: Replacing Hotpoint bearings

Iadom and Twoten – thank you for getting back so quickly.

Yes – is the answer to the final spin question of making noise only for about 4 washes and thought it was just a coin etc that has got lodged somewhere.

I will call the Indesit repair people and see what the damage is going to be.

Thank you again for all your help.

    Re: Replacing Hotpoint bearings

If you are certain that it has only been noisy for three or four washes then it is unlikely that the bearings have failed badly.

To tell the truth I do lots of bearing repairs that are in a dreadful state by the time I get to them. When I ask the customer how long they have been putting up with the appalling noise the always say, “only a few washes ” :rolls:

If and when the machine is repaired they will then admit that it is now quieter than it has been for months if not years.

It is possible to remove one of the blue plastic drum lifters to see if there is anything stuck under the drum.

Use a long thin bladed screwdriver and gently press it down the third hole from the front of a drum lifter then pull the lifter forwards. When refitting the lifter be sure to raise the small metal tab on the drum that you depressed to lock the lifter back into place, it should click as you press it back.

Thanks iodom, not thought of going into the drum that way. I always take the element out which allows you check up by the tub support with a dental mirror but taking taking the lifter out makes sense it’s quicker and easier to get back in.
