Replacing the bearings on a Hotpoint

I have a Hotpoint WMT02 washer and for the past month or so the machine has been getting noisier. I think it may be the bearings that are on their way out. The thing is I would like to know how easy/hard this job is going to be and will I need to replace the gasket on the drum, if so where can I get the gasket/gaskets from?(I live in Manchester). I have replaced the bearings on a washing machine before and have a good degree of both electrical and mechanical competence and a bloody big hammer. Is there any tips that you can give me?

Yes….allow yourself plenty of time, space and cups of tea!

Seriously, it is a big job for a professional albeit straightforward. All the components that form the bearing seal need replacing (usually the cause of the bearing failure in the first place) and if you’re unsure then replace the tub halves seal too, its not expensive compared to the rest of the components.
You do need to be sure of the condition of the bearing housing in the tub, any sign of looseness or misalignment will require the tub to be replaced as well. Often this is only revealed once stripped down.
As to sourcing the spares, have a look in the Shop@ or contact Dave Conway who i’m sure can provide them for you.

Worth pointing out that your machine is almost certainly under five years old, as such it is covered by Hotpoint’s five year parts warranty. They will change everything needed, for just under £90.00. A bearing change on this machine, as clivejameson has already said is not that simple, and if you run into complications, you cannot then go back to Hotpoint under your parts guarantee.

There are other things that can cause noise, motor, pump, suspension, loose concrete balance weights. Is the drum noisy when you turn it by hand?

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes the drum makes a low rumbling noise when turning it by hand which again makes me think that it is the bearings on the way out.

Not really worth the risk and considerable aggravation these bearings changes can cause, if you are still under the five year parts guarantee I strongly advise you to use it. 🙂
