ParticipantI was looking at the various news stories today especially those that concern Woolworths, MFI, DSG, and a few others. It got me to thinking what would happen if Currys and Dixon’s ceased trading leaving Comet and others like John Lewis, House of Fraser and some of the larger indie chains trading.
The fact that a lot of people buy from the likes of Currys and Dixons and that these retailers must be the biggest purchasers of stock from the likes of Indesit / Hotpoint and Beko, I wonder how those companies financial positions would fair to suddenly have such a large purchaser go down could we see the demise of the budget end of the market ?
I know that we all earn from the poor product quality but at the same time we also loose from it as well. But that said are we gonna see a turning point where the budget market shrinks and people will start demanding better quality appliances ?
There is serious trouble on the High Street without question and it seems that the names we all know have not faired well in this. On the flip side I have mates who are Plasterers, Electricians, Gas Installers, Builders, and like us they all seem to be way busy, so people have money for their services and they are spending it but not in the high street ?
Perhaps the time has come where people are spending on things that they really need as opposed to things that they don’t need ? Personally if DSG went out of business I would be happy as they have given me plenty of grief from time to time along with many of my own customers and they have themselves to blame for the absymal service they expect customers to put up with now compounded by poor sales nationwide.
Three Cheers For the Independent Retailer ! Hip Hip Hoo-ray !

I think its inevitable the white goods market has to shrink, the cosy relationship ‘tween sheds & manufacturers has squeezed the consumer as far as it can with regards to the 3 yr life dross on offer now, & i think people have had enough.
If this recession means the public take a long hard look at the wisdom of buying on credit & then scrapping, over & over again then i’m glad its happened. On a selfish level, i’m DELIGHTED i’ts happened, i havnt been so busy in YEARS!! 😯
It has to be customer led though, but if it all returns to normal in 2010 then the short collective memory of Joe public will probably just mean business as usual :rolls: -
