Hi, just wondering if anybody knows about this:
I am planning an upgrade to my fishtank, that requires the use of a perystalsic pump to run a de-nitrifying filter. I require a very slow flow through a filter chamber to create an anaerobic environment for bacteria, and need an adjustable perystalsic pump for the job. From an aquarium shop, these pumps are 75 quid, and the build quality is poor on the aquarium ones anyway, with the bearings wearing out after less than 12 months use if used continuously, but I have noticed them being sold on ebay as dosing pumps for dishwashers. Not knowing much about dishwashers, has anybody got any info on them please. I would like to try salvaging one from a broken dishwasher. Does anybody know which dishwashers use them? The type I am looking for is the one with a rotating rotor with 2 pinch wheels and a length of rubber tube in it. It needs to be adjustable to below one litre per hour flow rate ( I need a flow of one drop persecond through standard 4mm aquarium air line). Thanks for your help.

They are only used with commercial/industrial dishwashers and they usually cost far more from commercial suppliers than they do from eBay. 🙁

As far as the dosing rates are concerned, I’m sure they might be suitable for your needs. Though I personally would’nt buy anything that wasn’t designed to suit the purpose. Tropical fish can be an expensive hobby and their safety and care paramount. 😉

    Re: Rinse Aid Pump

I realise that, I have been keeping Tropical Marine fish for years. I am looking to make a DE-NITRIFYING filter, that is in addition to the main filter, so it will not interfere with the main filtration system, just augment it. The idea behind the de-nitrifying filter is a very slow flow through filter media in a chamber, that is devoid of oxygen, to enable anaerobic bacteria to break down nitrates to nitrogen and free flowing oxygen..

I can see they are expensive new, but they are actually cheaper than the ones sold to the aquaium trade, and are better made with heftier bearings.

What I was thinking of was to cannibalize an old one out of a scrap dishwasher.

You say that the pumps are available in commercial dishwashers, I am assuming the ones in the home use ones are not suitable? It must be a perystalsic pump.

Are there any companies out there that break commercial dishwashers for spares?

    Thanks.
