Perhaps you didn’t realise wilf that with the new GPRS mobile CC/DC terminals you don’t even need the card to process a transaction. 😉
In other words, a customer with similar fears as yourself can process his/her card either as a CNP (Customer Not Present) transaction or, for even greater security, a ‘Signature only’ transaction. In both cases they never need to go anywhere near the machine.
