Am I right in thinking that a rumbling/grinding noise from the pump, which started suddenly is something in the pump being bounced around a chewed up? Or could it be a pump about to fail?

Machine is a Hotpoint WD860 and has been nothing but trouble since the day we bought it, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was about to pack up.

If something has gone in there, what are the chances of it getting spat out again? Are the blades in the pump steel likely to chop up and discard a button or similar, or are they cheap and nastly plastic more likely to be damaged by the item itself?

    It’s just packed up completely!

Calling Hotpoint now – so I can waste more of my time waiting for a repair man to come and fix it.

I will NEVER buy Hotpoint again.

    Re: Rumbling Grinding Pump

Strong possibility there is something stuck in the pump, could have damaged pump or just need removing.

Coins, bra wires, hair bobbles, elestic bands and sundry other rubbish.

The type of pump used in this machine is basically the same as is used in most machines except the very expensive ones.

Hotpoint or not, anything like this is a direct result of careless misuse, not the make of appliance. 😉

IF there is something in the pump, it is more than likely a button which has come off during the wash. This is far from careless – it is just one of those things.

Hotpoint could have put some sort of filter in there to catch these things and stop them getting to the pump – other manufacturers do.

A good shake of the pump has started it going again, but it still sounds rough.

Tried calling Hotpoint, but they shut at 3:30 on a Sunday – what a ridiculous time to close! If you make shoddy machines, you should at least open at times when the poor idiots who bought them might want to call.

I have had this machine 3 years, and I must have had an engineer out on about 20 occasions – all for things which were not user fault. This machine, and from what I can gather, most early WD860 models, suffer from problem after problem after problem.

It should catch everything which the pump can’t easily spit out or what is the point in it? Either it doesn’t completely cover the pipe – thus making it pointless – or it has too large a grill on it – again making it pointless.

Is the inside of the pump easily accessible so I can actually check inside it for myself? If it IS just something in there then I can take it out and all should be well.

When I take the back of the machine off (the little white panel covering the motor and pump) I see two tubes attached to the pump – one thick black one which comes from the drum, and one thin white one which goes to the sink. Will taking these off show me anything?

    possibly

the best way, is to undo the 3 screws on the base of the pump were it screws onto the cover and look inside

Thanks, didn’t realise it was as easy as that to get into it – thought I’d have to pull all the pipes off it.

I’ll give it a try tomorrow night.

Pardon me, :rolls: but speaking from over 40 years experience in the trade repairing a large number of appliances from different manufacturers, I think that most if not all of my colleagues will agree with me that 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of pump obstructions are caused by objects that should not be in the washing machine in the first place.

Granted there will be the odd button but nothing like all the other rubbish left in pockets etc. Coins, bra wires, nails, screws, drill bits, doorkeys, dog leads, pens, pencils, watches, credit cards, hair bobbles, elastic bands, tazzo’s, colour catchers, ear rings, solid gold necklaces, false teeth, credit cards, hairgrips, golf tees, toothpicks, the list of things I have fished out of washing machines is endless. 😥

Pump blockages are not exclusive to Hotpoint, it happens with any and every machine on the market.

But since I check all the washing that goes in for anything in the pockets I am as sure as anyone can be that if something is in the pump, that it is not foreign to a load of washing.

I didn’t say these issues were exclusive to Hotpoint – merely expressed my annoyance that I have yet another problem with a constantly failing machine – however this one has or hasn’t been caused, all the previous incidents were component failure.

    Re: Rumbling Grinding Pump

I will concede that Hotpoint appliances are a long way from the best on the market, a situation that has become far worse in the past five or six years since they came under the control of the Indesit Company. 😥

TBH, washer/dryers in general are bad news unless you go way upmarket to the Miele range.

The pump on any washer dryer will work overtime as it is running for most of the drying cycle as well as the wash, rinse & spin. Its quite common for the modern design of pump to become very noisy and sieze up.

I have definately learned a lesson. I will not buy Hotpoint again – can’t trust them as a brand as far as I can thrown them and never will again I don’t think, and I won’t buy a washer/dryer again – I will buy seperate machines next time.
