Salt and Rinse Aid

I have had a problem for a long time with my dishwasher leaving a salty residue on everything every other wash. This only happened on the programmes that are 55 degrees and above.

I have solved the problem by running the rinse aid down and running most of the salt chamber down and setting the salt softener thingy to zero. We do have hard water in our area but having it on 2-3 caused the problem.

My question is if it seems to be cleaning ok, do I need salt and rinse at all?

Is there a problem with the machine during the water softener stage where too much is being released sometimes?
