    Hi,

We bought a Samsung fridge freezer 2 months ago and ever since its been installed its has been making a loud cracking sound. This noise even occurs when the ice maker is off. The loud cracking noise can be heard in the living room whilst watching TV and also through the night when in bed. The noise causes our dog to bark at night. Is this loud cracking noise normal ?

    Thanks

    Hi

At a guess this will be normal operating noise. The appliance goes into a automatic defrost every approx 11 hours where the fans turn off and a heater comes on which is attached to the freezer evaperator, when this turns on it causes any ice build up to crack which is similar to putting a ice cube under slow running water. once the evaperator has fully defrosted the appliance start up as normal again.

    Thanks Bryan,

Our loud cracking noise occurs virtually every hour but you can’t time it happening and sometimes 2 to 3 cracks in quick succession, some cracks are louder than others. This is constant 24 – 7 and doesn’t coincide with defrosting every 11 hrs. Its so annoying. Any other thoughts ?

    Cheers.

This would just be the sound of parts expanding and contracting with the change in temperature.

This may gradually get less as the parts like the rear panels in the fridge and freezer find there natural position and move slightly causing less stress on the plastic that makes the cracking noise.

    Thanks Bob.

The noise is waking us up at night and sending the dog beserk and quite frankly I think I’m going to have to speak to curry’s about it as it can’t carry on and we’ve only had it 2 months. The instruction book mentions that we could hear some ticking sound from the fridge freezer but this is far beyond a ticking noise.

    Regards !.

A load cracking noise like you describe may need checking out as this is not a fault normally associated with Samsung American fridge freezers.

If it was coming from inside the fridge freezer it would not normally be noisy enough to wake you up.

The only noise from inside the fridge that would be load enough is a iced up fan but that would not sound like a cracking noise.

The only trouble is as it is intermitant it may not make the noise when the engineer is there making it difficult for the engineer to diagnose as this is not a normal problem on Samsung Fridge Freezers.

Thanks Bob for your last comments. Really appreciated and going to persue the matter with Curry’s as we took out insurance when we bought it. Fingers crossed it doesn’t prove to be a lengthy process and they resolve the problem we’re having with it.

If it is frost free then there will be a heater to periodically melt any ice forming. If the system does not operate correctly then ice may build up beyond the ability of the system to remove it. Try turning the fridge off for 12 hours to ensure all ice has melted and see if it then works properly. If this does not solve the problem either seek advice from samsung or replace

It would be covered by the Samsung Warranty as the Currys insurance only comes into effect when the warranty runs out.

If it has iced up after 2 months then there is a problem and better to have it iced up so the engineer can see it.

The type of load noise points more to a problem of pipework expanding and contracting if it is inside the insulation then it may not be an easy fix.
