ParticipantHi
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/fix- … -freezers/
Having come across the above article, I was hoping you could tell me if the back panel I have needs replacing or is the newer type which is recommended – I am unable to add photos here due to file size though.
The fridge is about 8 years old and I remember when it was under 3 years old that there was a safety recall and an engineer came out to make a modification, although I cannot remember what was done, but think it was related to a fire risk possibly.
The problem now is that on Christmas day(!) the fridge started making a really loud noise which would stop by opening the fridge door, Over that day it started getting really loud and then the noise just stopped. The temperature initially rose but then went back to the usual 4 degrees.
Beginning of January it started making the noise again, so I googled it and came across this being a common problem. Following some info online I took off the back panel and found it was iced up everywhere. I took a hairdryer to all the ice and then reassembled and all has been fine until today when it started making the loud noise again – the temperature has been fine.
Pressing the top 2 buttons does not appear to throw any errors either, just a blank screen before lighting up with the normal display.
I imagine that ice has built up again but don’t know why.
I would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction!

It could be just a rear panel or it could be a defrost system fault.
Heater/Sensor/Thermal fuse. When you say it was iced up was it white frost all over the evaporator or frost and ice just near the top & Fan ?
If it was all over then you have a defrost system fault or if it just near the top & Fan it may be just the rear panel.
Just search the RS21 help on this site SAMSUNG RS21 AMERICAN FRIDGE FREEZERS FAULT CODES it has photos etc.

Thanks Bob.. It was all over the panel..
Is there a way to attach the photos I took or PM them to you to establish whether parts are required?
I suspect if I am not getting any errors on the panel that doesn’t mean there isn’t a fault?
Thanks again

If you look on the search you will see a lot of info on testing the RS21 there is also pictures you can look at.
If the fan is working ok and it is frozen all over it could be the defrost heater/ defrost sensor/ thermal fuse/ or drain heater as well as a new panel.
You can only tell by testing each item or putting it in test mode but the test mode does not always detect the fault.
If you search Samsung RS21 American Fridge freeezer on this site there is a helpful guide on RS21 faults with photos.
Or you could search find an engineer on this site.

Thanks Bob, I attach some pics – can someone tell from these whether they show the correct/upgraded parts are already fitted? I have searched the previous posts on this and am struggling to verify it for myself.
Is there an engineer in the Berkshire area interested in fixing it? I have used the find a repair engineer and it only came up with 1 company in London whom I have not heard heard from.
Thanks in advance.

The defrost heater is not working from the look of it the best way for a reliable repair would be a evaporator service pack and a new rear panel.
You can the take the parts Heater / defrost sensor / and thermal fuse off the new evaporator and fit the to the existing evaporator.
Plus fit a new rear panel that comes with all the fitting instructions for the panel.

Thanks Bob. Doing a front panel diagnostic now shows a no 4 R-FAN error, please see picture. Does this still mean that as long as I do what you suggest above that it should resolve the issue?
Is there an instructional or video showing ow to remove the parts off the new evaporator and putting on to the existing?
Thanks again so much for all your help.
