ParticipantHi, I bought a used Samsung RS21 with the usual problem of cold freezer/warm fridge. The guy was selling it as broken, and told me all the symptoms, so I looked at this forum first before I bought, and what a godsend you have been – thank you!
So, I got it home and switched it on – freezer temp dropped quickly to -20, then fridge slowly followed (over many hours) down to +5. Next morning fridge was back up to 17. Armed with the info I found here, I did some checks and found the fan not working in fridge. Ordered new fan motor and defrost sensor, and just fitted the fan motor first to see what happens. Switched on, and set both temps to lowest setting. Straight down to -25/+1 and stayed there without a wobble. Next day still at same temps! WooHoo! I’ve got a working FF for a grand total of £180. Not bad!I assume the fridge fan failed for a reason in the first place, and I suspect I have yet to find the root cause. Maybe the fridge iced up, as they do, and the owner did nothing about it, eventually locking the fan motor and burning it out? I will be keeping a close eye on the evaporator cover for icing over the next few days.
But…. I just did the two top button diagnostic thing, and I have the centre bar of the second digit, freezer side lit. Can anyone tell me what fault this represents, please? Could it be the defrost sensor on the freezer side? Could this then cause a failure of the defrost cycle in the fridge? I am guessing now, so I’ll wait for a reply from someone with more knowledge than me!
Many thanks in advance.
Andrew

5 days on, and fan motor replacement seems to have done the trick. Temps are rock steady, and no sign of ice build up. Installed fridge in proper place in kitchen today, and plumbed in the water supply (what a pain it was getting the pipe and fittings – even Plumb centre don’t stock it!!).
I have two questions now. Firstly, does anyone know the answer to my original question on the fault code (middle bar, right hand digit, freezer section)? I seem to be one of very few people here not to receive any replies!
Secondly, can anyone tell me how to adjust the water level fed to the ice tray, please? I only have a small amount delivered, and only a few very small ice cubes. The delivery rate at the water dispenser on door is quite slow too, presumably due to narrow bore pipe from mains to FF. Not worried about this, as long as I get cold water I don’t mind holding the glass for a few more seconds. Many thanks

Hi
The middle bar is a defrost fault, the fridge section has not completed a full defrost in the past 8 hrs, normally due to the defrost heater or thermal fuse failure.

I second that, it would be very nice to know as I had to disconnect mine, it just keeps pouring water. If you can’t tell, because of something weird, nonelectrical(licenses, Samsung copyrights, things like that), then I think that would be just as appreciated to be told. Not as useful, but better than nothing. Please don’t ignore this question?

Thanks for that. The middle bar is lit on the freezer digits, not the more usual fridge digits. Does this mean freezer or fridge is not defrosting correctly? No other signs of malfunction at the moment, but would like to get rid of the fault code before more problems show up. Have checked continuity on fridge thermal fuse (OK). Is defrost on an 8 hour cycle?

Hi
If the bar is in the freezer section then the fault will be in the freezer.

‘The delivery rate at the water dispenser on door is quite slow too, presumably due to narrow bore pipe from mains to FF. ‘
I believe that this will be to do with the water pressure and that the water pressure can be affected by the distance you have the unit from the mains supply
If it is quite far away then this will be making the water slow
If it is quite near then you have very low water pressure in your houseThis can be fixed by getting a water pressure booster
Not certain as to how they work so would suggest a plumberI know that you were not really worried about this but I thought I would just let you know anyway 😛

Hi again,
The fault code shown on the freezer defrost cycle has finally manifested itself as a warm freezer. Thought it would, but it’s taken a few weeks.Removed cover, manual defrost, tested all components, all give sensible readings but changed defrost sensor anyway, as I had a spare new one from fridge repair!
So, question is what resistance reading should I get from the defrost heater? I have 246 Ohms, which seems low to me. Is this correct? Thinking back to schoolboy physics, at 240V that gives a current of 1amp and therefore a power consumption of 240W. Not a lot considering the heat required to defrost the evaporator quickly? What should the heat output be? Maybe it’s trying to defrost but not quick enough to reset back to cooling again, and the system is just “waiting”?
Is there a way to force a defrost cycle so I can see what happens?
Maybe it’s foolish, but I pressed and held POWER COOL and FRIDGE TEMP together for a few seconds, display went blank then got constant beeping noise. Anyone know what this means? I left it for a while and the beeping just continues, even after the display has returned to normal. Then I switched off and on again to reset, because I didn’t know what it was doing! (chicken). Thanks for all help so far, and any more much appreciated!
ps water delivery is fine now, thanks.
