ParticipantHi all,
I’m new here and could use some advice please?
I tried searching for the combined issues I have and couldn’t see anything that matched.
Our old Samsung RS21DCNS seems to have given up. Some background: I had issues with noisy fan, fridge warming up etc last summer and fitted one of the many repair kits available. This cured the problem.
Over the past few days, we noticed that the freezer, which hadn’t been faulty previously had started to warm up despite the temperature display remaining the same. The temp display started to flash. Yesterday I also noticed the fridge was warming up. No error codes were displayed. Home from work today and the fridge is not working and that temp display is now flashing.
Both fans are working fine.
Any ideas on what it might be? I was hopeful of a defrost stat in the freezer but now the fridge isn’t working am wondering if its terminal. It must be about 12 years old so maybe its time to call it a day? Annoyed that I spent £120 on a fix that only lasted 6 months!
Thanks in advance

It sounds like you may have a compressor or refrigerant problem.
Take off the panel on the rear outside of the fridge / freezer so you can see the compressor.
Check to see if the compressor is running.
If the condensor / compressor fan is working and the compressor is hot to touch then it is most likely the compressor or low on refrigerant / possible leak not a DIY or cheap repair if Compressor or gas.
If the compressor is cold and not running then the electronics / defrost system or sensors need testing or the compressor relay may be faulty.

Hi Bob,
The fan is working but the compressor is hot. Is it now BER?Im not sure i want to spend anymore money (>£100) as its c.12 years old.
Do they have any value at all for spares etc? Quite a big thing to take to the tip!
Thanks for the help

It would cost more than £100 to repair so is BER you could strip some of the parts and sell on E Bay, or try selling it complete for spares on E Bay worth a try, or just ask the council to collect they charge a small charge for 2 items.

Hi, yep, worth a try as there are loads of individual shelves and trays for this model on eBay. I’ll try as a whole unit to start with!
Many thanks for your help – much appreciated. Gutted I now have to find £800-1000 for a new one.
I suppose 12 years isn’t bad though. Any reason not to buy a Samsung again?
Cheers

Dawoo or Beko are more reliable than the newer Samsung but it is down to personal choice.
It does not matter how much you pay for an Amrican fridge freezer it is the luck of the draw as to how long they last.
You could get 12 years no problem or 12 months that is the trouble with mass production today.

The good thing with Samsung is the parts are one of the most ready available out of all the manufacturers.
So any problems can have a quick remedy.

Thanks. The new Samsungs do at least have 5 year parts and labour warranty which is at least some piece of mind
They are also readily available as graded items with cosmetic damage only and still have the warranty. There’s a few on eBay at a few hundred off the RRP.
Our garage f/f is a Beko and that’s years old and was from a neighbour when we got it!
I’ll take a look at Daewoo and Beko as well. Thanks once again
