Hi. I have a RS21 samsung fridge freezer. A couple of years ago I replaced both the evaporator cover and later the evaporator heater. The fridge / freezer has been fine ever since but last night it tripped our RCD. I have followed your checks as follows: The thermal fuse has continuity, the main heater 480, the drain heater had 2k, the defrost sensor reads 7k at ambient temp. When i unplug the thermal fuse the fridge switches on without tripping the RCD but fails to run the compressor. The readout lights up the top right vertical segment on both the fridge and freezer. Trying to perform diagnostics fails to work. I have tried disconnecting the freezer side which appears to operate okay, but when the fridge thermal fuse is reconnected everything trips out. It suggests to me that the thermal fuse / main heater are at fault, however they do not appear to be going to earth. There appears to be signs of heat around the capillary that the defrost sensor is attached to. What do you think please?

Keep the thermal fuse connected and just unplug the defrost heater in the fridge if it runs ok the the defrost heater is down to earth.

If it still tripps the mains then the compressor is the most likely fault

The fridge heater is the heater that normaly tripps the RCD on an RS21

Rare for the heater on the freezer side.

DON’T keep testing and letting it trip out.

IF it is the heater then you MAY LOSE your kitchen by testing this way.

    Hi Both,

Thanks for coming back to me. I have connected the fridge to an external RCD to save the house. If i unplug the the defrost heater (middle plug) on the fridge it does not trip out. However it doesn’t fire up either (which I would have expected it to do). I have tested both the main heater and the drain heater, both with expected resistances and neither short to ground. With the heater disconnected the display lights the top right vertical segments and they constantly flash. I am starting to think its the compressor? Does this info help with further diagnosis?

    Thanks again.

    Hi

It wont restart if the sensors are disconnected. the segments tell you that theres a fault with the sensors which aren’t connected.

If you need a defrost heater to which I would suspect without question then e-mail me @ samsung@ffrservices.co.uk

    Hi Bryan,

Just got back off holiday so fitted the heater yesterday, fridge sorted and wife happy! Your advice and support was greatly appreciated as the checks all suggested to me that the fridge was finally dead.

    Thanks again.

Re: Samsung RS21 tripping out RCD

I have the same issue with my RS21DPSM.

I have checked the thermal fuse inside the fridge cabinet as this came up in a search online but that is fine. I unplugged all connectors from main PCB and eliminated one by one and found the 13 pin plug bottom right to be causing the trip. This plugs into a smaller PCB with 3 fuses on. I checked the fuses, all ok. So i removed one by one. The fuse on pin 7 (orange wire) to be at fault. This is a return cable from thermal fuse so I’m stumped. Any one help??
