ParticipantI called on this Fridge freezer yesterday freezer not getting cold (Fridge Ok), customer had previously switched off to defrost the freezer section.
It had been back on for 24 hours when I arrived but the temperature still only read -5. and fast freeze on
Looked at the evaporator there was a small area frozen on the top of the evaporator the rest was clear (possible it had just been on a defrost)?? as it was gradually defrosting.first thing I thought possible system fault, but she called me today to say it went down to -20 for a while now it back to -5 again.
Could this just be a sensor fault??
Does this have a valve to direct the gas from fridge to freezer?
Any help would be appreciated

defrost problem normally in fridge section causing unit to stay off too long. check heater t/fuse etc no valve.make sure to disconnect tray heater in fridge before checking main heater.

How can the fridge be the problem when the fridge is holding correct temperature, and the freezer not.?
When they have two seperate evaporators.Regards

Air sensors tend not to give any problems. Defrost sensors give lots of problems due to water ingress. Samsung have modified them.
No gas valve fitted. The gas runs through fridge evap first then to freezer evap so short of gas or weak compressor may give you the indication you saw with light frost at the top of the freezer. However if it then went to -20 this seems unlikely.
As robinsonrobbo says the normal problem with these is the defrost on the fridge side and the first thing the customer complains of is either the water dispenser not working (if fitted) or the freezer temperature keeps rising. When it goes onto a defrost (the timing of 24 hours after they switched it off sounds right) the compressor and fans switch off and the elements on both sides come on. Once the defrost sensor on freezer side reaches temperature it will switch off the element on that side. The same with the fridge side. Once both sensors have reached temperature the system will switch back on. Now if the fridge thermal fuse or element are faulty you have the situation where the freezer element has been on and defrosted the evaporator but the system will not switch back on as it is waiting for the fridge to defrost. It will then rely on the ambient room temperature to bring the fridge defrost sensor to temperature which could be hours. Hence the freezer defrosts.
Hope that makes sense 😕January 17, 2008 at 4:09 pm #239852admin

Hi
Sorry just read the first post over again and the fault you will have is a restriction,TYhe refrigerant is flowing through the fridge evaperator ok but it is not getting round the freezer evaperator.
Try switching off for 48 hrs before you arrive with both doors left open and vac the system and regass.Hopefully you will be succesfull,If not then its a new unit.unless you want to change the evaperator.

if it is getting down to -20 as you say in your post then doubtful system problem. i have had a lot of these where machine cuts out for defrost and fridge heater (only one i have ever changed) is open circuit therefore not terminating defrost quick enough and as a result the freezer temp rises that is how the fridge can effect the freezer.
cheers chris.

Looked at the evaporator there was a small area frozen on the top of the evaporator. As the freezer is NOT getting to -20…restricted.

IN HIS ORIGINAL POST he states the lady said it did get to -20 so if restricted it would not do this. i have never had a system fault other than comp on one of these.

Have you tried the self test to see if any fault is showing up ❓ ❓

ParticipantRe: Samsung RS21DCNS
Yes done the test mode not showing a fault.
Thanks for all your advice, really appreciated.
I will pop back and replace the sensors see how things go.Regards

I have looked up the part numbers for both sides, they appear to be same numbers is the correct?
