Having read a few posts on the subject of Samsung side-by-side fridge/freezers it seems my own appliance also suffered the now notorious 2year design fault. the circulation in the fridge reduced drastically and whilst it was cold in the freezer and the botttom half of the fridge, the sensor was displaying up 19 degrees inside fridge temperature – not good – but it was still operating fine just no cool airflow, to the top half of the fridge. So thinking it was jst a fan problem, i bought a new fan motor from currys partsmaster and called out a chap of reasonable callout fee to install it properly. he swapped the motors round mentioned it needed a defrost and left saying “leave it off for a while and it should be ok, there was a problem with the LCD but it’ll right itself after switching it back on”. The only things now left working are the inside light bulbs, no freezer no fridge no display at all on on the LCD on the freezer door, nothing!
i’ve tried calling him back out to try again but he claims he’s waiting for a technical guide to be emailed from samsung(uk) since the user and installation manuals don’t cover much in the way of technical maintenece. where this is fair enough reason to not appear, i get the feelingb he’s not going to be able to fix it without heavy cost anyway, even if it is mainly his doing.

so the questions i have are
    1) if he can’t fix it, (according to the website) he’s fully insured, does this mean –
1.the insurance will pay for the fridge to be repaired/replaced considering it was only a smal installation job he was doing?

    2. if i get someone else to fix it/buy a new fridge will the insurance pay for that?

    3. am i jut delusional and am about to get done over by a dodgby cowboy repairman?

    Hi

His insurance wont pay . The only insurance that will pay would be if you have break down cover insurance your self. His insurance will only be for public liability.

I hope this helps. This is a design fault, not the fault of the engineer. Complain to Samsung and you are within your rights to complain to the retailer and ask for a replacement up to 6 years after supply. (Check with your local trading standards office.

Some very helpful advice on this forum. Thought I’d add my experiences in order to help others.

I bought a Samsung RS21WCNS model, about 2 yr, 8 months ago. Worked fine until 1yr 11 months when fan behind the Cool Wall panel in the fridge section of this side-by-side, American style, fridge-freezer (with auto defrost facility) started to make a noise.

Cool wall panel was replaced under warranty by Samsung and a superseeded part was installed – to help avoid ice build-up, the cause of the fan noise.

Worked fine until about 3 weeks back when fan had stopped. Top section of fridge warm, bottom icing up. I removed the Cool Wall panel, checked the fan, defrosted the area using a fan dryer for speed (left unit powered-on and hence freezer remained -20. This replaced item only carries 90 day warranty and it’s now 8 months since replacement.

Replaced Cool Wall cover and fan works intermittantly. I contacted Samsung several times with little assistance on their part although I made it clear I was prepared to pay for the repair. I would however prefer a visit/diagnosis and estimated cost of repair at outset and with minimal initial outlay.

I found a supplier and stockist of the Cool Wall panel – although I am reluctant to spend £90 and try to install myself as I feel other faults are at play here.

Many repairers in Yellow pages will not touch Samsung – reasons being cost of parts, lack of availability, poor reliability, overly complex units.

I’ve been informed by one reluctant repairer to take out a 5 year warranty next time I purchase a Frost-Free unit.

Tempted to purchase an LG model on offer at Comet/Currys for approx £598 and take out the 5 year warranty for £200 and cut my losses.

I would never purchase a Samsung fridge/freezer again and would be reluctant to look at other Samsung products.

Thanks for the comments Mike and, I hate to tell you this, but the above is pretty much a case of out the frying pan and into the fire. 😕

LG are just as bad, if not worse in my experience. We struggled to get parts for them even when they were in warranty and it’s no fun trying to explain to people that there’s little we can do about it.

so u’ll lay out best part of £900 to change an appliance that , at the outside needs a thermal fuse, possibly a sensor?

    makes no sense

im changing the fuses everytime i change the evaporator cover, and theyre not coming back….

although ive also seen some lg machines require control boards rather quickly – so its your call

whirlpool ones tend to be better

And better still, rather than an Italian pretender, a proper Maytag as they just trundle on for years in the main. 😉

Sorry Helo, too many problems with the damned boards in those although you are correct in that they are better than the Korean stuff. Lots better. The parts may not be cheap but at least you can get them and a bit of tech support when they go.

Complain to Samsung? Nice idea but I will guarantee that they will not be able to do anything even if the appliance is under the warranty. The fact that a third party engineer has made a fault worse they wont touch it. You will get the usual ” We cover manufacturing faults only” and told to contact the engineer that originally came out to you.
