As old granny never used to say.. “You’ll never get bored with a Samsung f/f. Friggin mad maybe, but never bored..”

When I connect the power the water flows into the ice tray, and the ice auger motor starts running. Problem is this never ends! 1, 2 litres.. I waited as long as I thought possible before pulling the power, but neither water or motor stopped.

So, could anyone explain what’s controlling the water flow into the ice tray? I’d be extremely grateful. (Don’t know if the water and motor are different problems or caused by the same thing) I couldn’t find anything except the ice temp sensor beneath it, so I guess it’s some kind of timer in the processor? Not much circuitry on the PCB, the ice water valve is controlled – almost – directly from the processor. Or does it depend on the state of some input?

I metered the front ice flap, and it is ok, not stuck “on” or “off”. Turning the ice off on the front display seems to have no effect(though I might be wrong there?).

If I disconnect the PCB connector for the ice flap, the water/motor won’t start running. But I suspect that is just a general “stop everything if everything is not ok” policy in the processor? I.e. I could probably disconnect just about any of the connectors, with the same effect.

Yes, I’m a DIY man. But only half by choice. I can take advice from you experienced guys, but I just don’t have the money for evaporator covers that cost 80£ and similar. (Regarding the from time to time more or less friendly DIY vs engineer call debate ;))
    /Respect and regards.

    its timed by the pcb

you can change the fill time via the front pcb, im sure r600a/macmini will be here shortly to advise u on this

other than that, its a duff pcb….

It could be a potentially Great thing to know, how to control the fill time. ’cause right now it just keeps filling :-[.. And the crazy ice auger motor runs. That puzzles me even more, as the ice flap at the front seems to be ok.

Seems difficult to get to the front pcb, right? If it is inside the “made in one piece” door. Sigh. All the repair men/engineers seems to be on vacation, too.

nah, if u look under the plastic shroud on the door, theres 2 small holes, enuff to get a screwdriver in, and it will lever off, to get to the pcb, but its the other pcb, at the back thtas more likely to be the problem

in the meantime, if you press the top two buttons ( one at either side of the display)for 8 seconds, the display will flash, and , if theres a fault a segment should stay illuminated
    let us know which one?

    oh r600a/macmini… where are you?

Don’t forget to unplug appliance if you are to attempt yourself :plug:

    Hi

How old is your appliance ?

Does the water run if the appliance is unplugged ?

If the water runs only when turned on then the PCB is a high likely hood even though these are very reliable.

If the control PCB on the door has got damp or wet then this may be the cause also,If you are going to attempt repair yourself then TURN OFF the power.

Try and dry out the display PCB once you have it dismantled with a hair drier.

Pressing the top buttons wont supply a fault for this fault.

Where about in the country are you ?

    Thanks all for replying.

Unfortunately I don’t know how old it is, I bought it at least second second hand ;-|. Though I suppose I could try asking Samsung for help using the serial number? I’m pretty sure it’s out of warranty, though.

I will definitely unplug it before doing repairs. Thanks for pointing it out.

The water starts running a couple of seconds after connecting the power. I can hear the relay on the main pcb switching, and the signal to the water valve changes(multimeter). But metering the front ice flap from the main pcb reveals no errors, ~0 Ohms when pressed, open circuit otherwise.

So the part about actually supplying the water to the ice tray seems to be working(Am I right that the only pressure used here comes from the water pipe that the appliance connects to, and that’s why the appliance manual keeps mentioning minimum pressure for which the appliance functions?) But the terms for *when* to supply it seems to have gone up the wall or something. If power is disconnected the water stops flowing, and the auger motor stops. But if left connected the water keeps(?) coming, at least a couple of litres. After that I had to stop it.

I’ll try drying the display pcb and see if anything else is wrong there. As the control signal for the valve relay on the main pcb comes – almost – directly from the processor it is kind of hard to backtrace. Making more or less qualified guesses about which inputs that are used for this can probably be beyond tedious.

Actually I’m from Sweden. I don’t mind british spares, but the freight costs might scare me off ;). Heaven knows that it might be easier *finding* the parts here, though. There’s one repairman in town that deals(?) with these boxes. Asked him questions about the Samsung three times, two times he said he’d mail Samsung Sweden and ask them, I have never heard from him since. I haven’t found anything close to this site here in Sweden, hope it’s ok that I’m here. If this is solved I’ll share my findings with the forum, of course.

Have you tried pulling the connections off the solenoid ?

The water valve solenoid? I disconnected the connector for it on the main pcb(the connector leads to the water valve and the ambient sensor). That was not so wise I guess, as the whole appliance just came to a halt. I think the policy for the main pcb is to stop everything if everything isn’t ok, and when it couldn’t read the ambient temp..

All that happened was that a bar(not the usual one) in the front temp display kept flashing. I’m sort of decoding/learning the display codes here ;-j..

I’m pretty sure that disconnecting the other – the valve – end, would make the water stop coming. (Probably the ice motor would keep running though :-[, but one problem at a time) It’s just that both my wife and the kids like the cold water..

Have you done as R600 asked? Seriously you shouldn’t be disconnecting things live 😯

You mean mailed him the numbers? Yep, been there, done that. And I’ve unplugged the whole thing. I’m sorry if I led you to believe otherwise :). I’m looking at the front pcb now. And trying to clean the ice&water … cavity? Lot’s of brown stains and stuff, looks like someone made coffee there or something.

Situation report: The front pcb seems to be ok, as far as I could check. No moisture visible, but with all the connections disappearing in under the big display block detailed checks were not really possible. Also checked all wires between front and main pcb, they were ok.

When I connect the power, to begin with all symbols on the front display light up for some seconds.
After that ‘3’ is shown in the fridge(?) temp, again for some seconds.
After that the “normal” display mode kicks in, with some 20 degrees C in both f&f, one of the ice cube mode lamps on etc.
Does that number 3 mean anything to you?

Oh, and my hair is still not pointing straight out from my head ;). On the more serious side that’s because I’ve been careful with what I’ve been doing. Sidenote for the casual reader.
