Samsung RSH1NBRS fridge icing up

Fridge defrost components as follows:

Heater 379 ohms
TOC continuity
NTC 7.36K at 15degC and 1.95K at about 50degC (didn’t have means to test at lower temps)
Fan red to black 1.83K, red to white 20K, bk to white 21.8K
Brown and white wires which disappear into evap cover near the fan, 10.37k at about 15degC (I’m assuming this is a sensor).

The fan is running, the gutter is not blocked, the evap cover looks to be in reasonable condition, and there is no problem with the freezer so I assume that the PCB is sending out all the right defrost signals.

So I’m a bit baffled. Could it be that even the slightest bit of compression/distortion to the evap cover could cause problems?
Are the fridge and freezer activated by the same defrost signals?

Any answers gratefully received.

The Brown and White wires on the evaporator cover lead to another heater.

Is the defrost sensor on the right hand side if so it needs to be mounted on th left on the pipe work leading to the evaporator.

Also the cover may need replacing as the polystyrene loses the insulation qulity due to absorbing moisture.

Hi Bob,

So presumably the heater that the brown and white wires run to is for minimising ice build up at the fan.

The defrost sensor is on the right. Are the leads long enough to change its location to the left, or do I get a replacement sensor?

The appliance worked for the first three years of its life without icing up. Something has obviously changed to cause this problem. I don’t dispute that moving the sensor will help, although clearly it worked ok in its current location to begin with. So degradation of the evap cover seems to be the only other possibility although I have seen much worse. Would you recommend changing the heater while I’m at it? The appliance is four years old.

I’ll have to say the RS21 model is much more cut and dried. It’s almost always just the evap defrost heater and sensor with these, although I have come across some damaged covers too.

Evaporator covers last about 3 years before needing replacement so replace the cover.

You can get a replacement longer sensor but the old one just reaches and needs to be on the left hand side.

There are a few different heater shapes fitted to this model.

If you have just the L shape heater then it is best to change it to the newer shape but you also need to reprogram the defrost time if you change to a different heater.

If you have the L shape heater you need to check behind the evaporator to make sure it has not burnt through the liner of the fridge, if it has you need to fit a stick on aluminium shield to repair it.

It has to be set using the display PCB.

It depends on the heater fitted if you replace the heater with the same as on the fridge then you will not need to reset the defrost time.
