ParticipantNice Saturday morning job replacing a door boot. I usually pride myself on removing awkward screws but the lid screws to access the inner band on the tank nearly defeated me. I flung everything I had at it including my 2ft long screw driver used for getting baked in screws out of ovens, clouted a screwdriver with my lump hammer – usually loosens them but didn’t this time. Had to return home to get the anglegrinder which didnt do the plastic tabs on the lid much good but as the screws were stainless it seemed the only way. Have come across tight screws on LGs as well, the Koreans must be setting their screwdrivers to a high torque or perhaps I’m just an old wuz.

I’ve noticed this problem too, specifically on Korean machines it must be said. I generally only carry a PH size 2 to tackle all cross head fixings but some of these screws have a tiny head as well as being overly tight, maybe a PH 1 would fit some of them ?
Seems needless though, unless its a deliberate ploy to make them harder to repair.Eddie.

A good engineer never blames his tools… but screwdriver tips do blunt over time. Unless the screw is rusted in, a relatively new (hand) screwdriver with the correct tip (for Korean machines Philips No 2 rather than Pozidrive No 2) should fit snugly in the head. For those tight lid screws, I find leaning over the machine from the front can give better leverage.

Weller soldering gun in the screw head for a minute then sharp tap on the end of the screwdriver might free them off.

A drill / driver set on torque setting shocks them loose.
If there is not enough room you can get long screw bits and driver holders.
