ParticipantHi All.
Thank you for this great site!
I am getting Err Code 3 on startup; ie defrost sensor is crook. However I also get an open circuit reading on the evp heater.
Other readings are: Drain htr 2.18kohm, Def sensor 11.62kohm @ 0degC, PCB output to disconnected def sensor 5.2v and when connected 2.7v @ 15deg, 3.2v @ 2deg and 3.38v @-8deg (oops).
The def sensor is the original white one – I know, I know put a black one in!!
My question is – is it really the def sensor or is the def htr not working and the fridge is interpreting that as a sensor fault because the defrost isn’t happening?
Regards,
Doug

Hi
If you are getting a open circuit on the defrost heater then it needs changing which would cause it not to defrost showing a defrost error.

Thanks Bryan,
Am I right in thinking the defrost heater ONLY comes as a unit with the evaporator? I know they are very closely coupled to optimise heat transfer to the fins, but it does look like it could be carefully separated and replaced if it was available separately.
And if the evaporator has to be replaced is it a straight forward job for the average refrig. serviceman?
By the way, does the evap heater pull 240volts? Just curious – I wouldn’t try for a repair – too much moisture around and thermal stressing for it to last long and the chance of an unintended path to earth is pretty high 😯 .

Doug

Most of the Samsung defrost heaters, although ONLY supplied with the evaporator assembly, can be replaced without breaking into the refrigerant system. That said, it’s not what I’d class as a DIY job as, if you do bust a pipe, you’re goosed and you need to regass the unit.
Nice serviceable appliances. :rolls:
We love it really.
Well, actually, we don’t. We despise stupidity as much as anyone else when it makes our lives harder.

Hi
The heater can be replaced if removed without the need for a regas or system work.
When I supply the evap assembly I enclose instructions how to remove and refit.

Thanks for your reply Bryan.
Looking at the thing carefully, it seems that to replace the heater one has to be very careful of all the tiny fins – twist them slightly to release the heater and twist them back to get good heat transfer from the new one.
Apart from that, it needs reasonable care with the cable ties to snug the heater in, but not overtighten them.
Of course, not bending the evaporator about very much. Is that about it?

Doug

Hi
Yes and also placing the new thermal fuse and defrost sensor in the correct possition.
