    Twin cool model

Freezer not freezing – reports wrong temp – confirmed by turning off and on – reports true temp then tells me lies!! Fridge now does same

My woes began last week when I noticed that some of the food didn’t feel frozen. A few days ago I noticed a bag of ice I had was melting. A forum suggestion to turn it off for half an hour only helped it to rise to 4 degrees and stay there.

I had a look at the back by the condenser coils and it was very dusty – hoovered it out. No difference
All food was transferred to the spare.

Since that started to cool very slowly – a rate of 1 degree each twelve hours.

Holding the top two buttons for 8 seconds gives no error codes – it just lights all lights then goes blank for a few seconds then back to displaying the actual temperatures. Although after I got the panels off it will remain blank if I do the second thing.

Fridge compartment was operating flawlessly it seemed until I started taking apart the freezer and testing components.

I stripped her back and there was an ice build up at the top of the coils but it hadn’t affected the fan.

I de iced with a hair dryer and set about testing.

I followed a guide on testing of all the components – on a site called u kan fix it – no links allowed apparently so can’t post it but it comprehensive I think. Only some differences in appearance.

The only one that came back with a reading inconsistent with the guide was the defrost heater giving the wrong resistance

This is all assuming the guide I followed was correct.

Resistance across the two wires that disappear into the silver tape on the back of the freezer was 1.27 rather than 2 as per the spec in the guide I followed – this would indicate a faulty defrost heater.

So could this be the problem – I reassembled and it appeared to be working well but I suppose it will just happen again and again and again.

The defrost heater looked to live behind the coils and hard to get to although I’ve seen a defrost heater for the RS21 and it looks identical to the metal part that seems to be my drainage hole.

I’m confused at this stage –

1 – were those resistance readings worth taking note of
2 – is my defrost heater the sticky silver type or the drain hole type
3 – will the defrost heater going poop affect the fridge as the fridge is not cooling now
4 – depending on the answer to 3 is this something I can replace.
5 – if not what’s the cost of an engineer to do this

I’m competent at most things electrical but this is a freezer and has gas – I wouldn;t want to try and remove something that was gassed.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Do I buy a new Fridge freezer? Replace something? Call an Engineer (reluctant because I can handle most jobs myself unless it calls for real specialism)

Here’s a pic of my evap/defrost heater assy (unplugged for electrical testing) in case anyone recognises it.

    Cheers munchkins

Just found out that the drain bit has a heater and that is the connection that is connected in-line with the defrost heater so I revert to asking – is replacement of the defrost heater on this model something I can do?

I didn;t pull the whole assy out because I was worried that those copper bits on the top right were gassed and breaking them would ruin it – how does one get to the defrost heater to replace?

Will dismantle again tonight anyway and look at ice build up.

    Hi R600a

I’ve seen some of your posts on other forums. Yuo’ve got history with this unit then!

    I’ll certainly take your advice

It’s been three days since I pulled her open and melted the ice and tested bits. Fridge still at 7 degrees and freezer at 1.

I’m trying to uiunderstand how the defrost sensor or heating packing in will have an impact on the fridge on these twin cool models – I’m afraid I don’t understand the system clearly enough and have been advised elsewhere to do this

“Remove the screws on the outside rear panel. This exposes the Compressor, condenser coil and condenser fan. Is the compressor hot and is the fan running?
Look for a black box that isn’t attached to the compressor but has a single cable going to your compressor.”

What is the purpose of this test?

I put faith in the expertise of the fellows on these forums but I’m an IT systems Engineer and that part of me wants to understand and would love to understand why these parts need checking.

It seems the consensus is that it’s not the defrost heater – I assume the resistance reading was all good.

What does the defrost sensor look like – bottom plug of those three clustered on the top right – replace with newer edition? I’ll go looking for that then.

    Hi

Forget the compressor. its the defrost cycle. the common part on this model is the defrost sensor

I’ve ordered the part – will report back once arrived and installed

Re: Samsung SR-S2028DVW Freezer and fridge temp issues

    Hi
So I installed the part on Friday – it started to get to where it’s supposed to over the weekend. Had my -16 and 2 degrees then last night noticed the -16 was flashing.

Turned it off then on again with 10 second pause to reset the circuit and the fidge side displayed a 3 (error code) and the freezer side displayed nothing then it went on to display an actual temperature of 1 for freezer and 2 for fridge.

This morning there was a pool of dirty water by the front right of the unit on the floor.

At my wits end now. Looked up the 3 error and it says it’s a problem with the defrost circuit. Am I chasing a red herring here?

    Hi,

Have you been able to fix your fridge/freezer?
    What was your solution?

    I have a similar problem.
Both the freezer and fridge run to the desired temperature (-20 & 3), but after they reached the correct temperature, the warm up again, but don’t cool down again. The temperature on the screen keeps at the -20 & 3 readings, but a thermometer clearly shows a higher temperature.
When I unplug and replug the fridge, with 10 seconds in between, the fridge now shows the correct temperature readings of 14+ degrees, runs again for 1 cycle, but then stops, until i plugged it out and in again.

I unscrewed everything, and tested the thermal fuse (at other forums I read, this should be the issue), but there was electrical continuity. So this is not the problem.
Also the temperature sensor seems to be working as it gives a correct reading when cooling down (not when heating up again) and a correct reading when i plug the fridge back in.

My model is the RS S2229css but it looks exactly the same at the inside as similar SR 20-21-22 models.

The problem is for both fridge and freezer, so i guess it should be something that controls both?

    Any help?

Re: Samsung SR-S2028DVW Freezer and fridge temp issues

Found out that it’s the freezer that’s the problem. Once it reached the set temperature, it stops checking the temperature (of both freezer and fridge it seems).
If you however change the setting of the temperature for the fridge, it will start running again… till it reaches that temperature. then it stops everything again. Any idea’s?

Re: Samsung SR-S2028DVW Freezer and fridge temp issues

For any other person who’s going crazy on finding the solution on similar problems (I’ve been going nuts for almost a week now), the solution could be super easy, no parts needed!
It’s only been running for an hour or so now on the desired temperature, but that’s the longest I ever managed to get to when reaching the freezer temperature I wanted.
My solution (if it keeps working):
    1. initial setting for the freezer was at -20 degrees. when it reached that temp, everything stopped.
    2. now change the setting of the temperature for the freezer to -18 degrees.
    3. Once it reaches that, change it to -21 degrees
    4. once it reaches that, change it back to -18 degrees and never touch it again 🙂

So far that’s working for me. If it still works tomorrow and i remember, I’ll post an update 🙂

Never mind, the illusion couldn’t have been any bigger 2 hours later… back where we started.
