ParticipantHello folks, I hope someone out there can give me a little advice. I have a problem with my side by side similar to others I’ve read about on this forum. The fridge and freezer go into permanent defrost mode after about 11 or 12 hours of normal operation and the figure I have set on the freezer side is flashing. I turn it off and on and hey presto the true temperature shows and it works fine for another 12 hours. I’ve tried the diagnostics as described within this site and it shows no error. Any ideas please, even if I could just explain to the engineer what I have learnt if I have to get one in, it would help.
Cheers

Participantthe defrost heaters probably faulty
can only buy as part of the evaporator, but it can be prized off
comes complete with defrost sensor and thermal cut out, advisable to change all 3 components to ensure affective repair

Thanks for the reply Helo_75, Just to clarify if I may: This is the Freezer side? and I need to buy the evaporator and remove from it the defrost heater, defrot sensor and the thermal cut out?
And where do I order?
Thanks again
Chas

Participantvery unusal for freezer defrost heater to fail.
Never seen one fail in 9 years its always the fridge side that plays up.
Most likely sensor and thermal fuse.

Thanks for that expertcat. would not the flashing number on the freezer side indicate a problem there?

Participantthe only way you’ll ever be sure of a fault is to get a meter out and test
reasoning for considering the defrost heater is faulty?
the sensor has switched the machine to defrost, and because the heater is faulty, it wont defrost, will it?
therefore, it switches off, untill the point where it either defrosts naturally, which could take days,or you manually restart it by unplugging/plugging it back in
either way, the fault lies in the fridge, not the freezer, ive NEVER done any work on the freezser side personally
and i fix a LOT of them

Thanks for that valuable information helo_75. I tested the defrost heater and the drain heater of the fridge side using a simple 9v circuit test and both, after lots of attempts show as open circuits. The heaters on the freezer side however show a closed circuit and a full flow of juice. Heaven knows about resistance. Would I be right in concluding that the fridge heaters are dead?

Participantwhat you really need to do is disconnect the 2 heaters
if you test them together, and one is faulty (open circuit) it will show, regardless of which one
youll probably find the defrost heater is the culprit, as per my original post
order the evaporator, and change the heater , sensor, and thermal fuse , because theye updated the sensor, and its best to renew everything

My fridge/freezer (Samsung SR-S2028CVW) has the widely reported fault of failing to cool on both sides, temporarily fixed by swithching off and on. I removed the internal rear panels on both sides expecting to find a build up of ice but there is none. This suggests to me that the defrost heaters are working and that a sensor is faulty – do the experts agree? If so, what’s the most likely culprit?

Thanks for the quick reply – much appreciated.
When it’s in the fail mode it doesn’t restart cooling by itself, I have to switch it off then on again. Lights, panel display etc. still work – just no cooling. No errors show when I run the diagnostic routine from the panel.
