ParticipantHi,
I’ve got a Samsung SRS2028 that is giving me problems.
The kids left the freezer door open and the the temp went up. called an engineer and he came and de-frosted the back and all seemed fine.
After a few hours i noticed the temp was going up and then down and called the engineer back who told me the compessor had packed up.
The temp is still all over the place sometimes it reaches -18 then after a while it goes to 5 and so on.
Tried pressing the 2 top buttons for 10 secs but no fault indicates.
Any ideas
Thanks

It would be unusual for a compressor to behave that way, not impossible, but certainly unusual.
Is the freezer reaching +5ËšC or -5ËšC?
It is possible that there’s a fault with the evap fan or ice blocking it, I’d be looking there first but it is a bit of a strange one. 😕

Weird fault TBH.
To hit +5ËšC it’s not cutting the compressor in due to a misreading of the temperature, which would point to either a stat, thermistor or PCB problem or, it’s the compressor overheating and restarting once it’s cooled off. At least, that’s the only two plausible reasons I can think of.
That said, I’d not be thinking it was a misreading if it’s back on and getting back down to -18ËšC. It’s too big a variance and also, normally, when one of the other components chucks it then you’d get it doing one thing or the other, cooling too much or not at all.

If the compressor is kaput then you’re looking down the barrel of a £200+ bill to replace it.
Given the cost of a replacement Samsung side by side, the age of an SRS (I think they’re all pre-2003) and the hassle factor I wouldn’t advise a repair on it. But that’s just my opinion as, realistically, I’d expect 8-10 years out of one at best and you’re more than halfway to that I’d imagine.
There again, I wouldn’t advise buying a Samsung pretend American fridge freezer, but I am rather opinionated on that subject. 😉
