ParticipantSamsung DV80T5220AN/S1 heat pump tumble dryer. It will start what ever program i select and the drum will spin, it will heat up and collect water, but then it will just pause itself and just stop working. Pressing play will sometimes resume the cycle for a bit but then it will just stop again. Once it came up with a 3C error – which on the samsung website points to the motor, but that error has never come up again since.
Yesterday it completed a full cycle but then the following day paused itself after 10 minutes.
Its about 2 and a half years old and with what it cost new i want to try and fix it.Thanks, Chris.

ParticipantThis is an intelligent guess. Can`t find much about your dryer but then that is Samsung for you. However there is a video on youtube that does point to the motor and the sympton is stopping some way in the cycle and points to a black switch attached to the motor as part of the motor`s terminal block. From what I can gather the contacts within this black switch get burnt and fail = no motor action = the fault code. It also states that the switch box is only available with a new motor (of course it will be!). Could be barking up the wrong tree and your machine might have something entirely different but worthwhile having a bloody good look if you can.
check out this video: https://youtu.be/Zck93QQ1cvE?si=9cxhZcqtvPzYiOts this is not your model BUT it MIGHT have the same motor and it MIGHT be your problem. I looked up your model via samsung spares 4our house site and found their part number (it is not a Samsung part number) 4106280OH (£140.21) but there is no picture of that motor listed as that would be really useful in order to x reference.
Judging by the number of various videos on the motor this would seem to be a fairly common failure point and looking at the `orrible cheap and nasty switch I can see why..but there you go, C21st strikes again! Note there could well be a mirade of other causes other than a duff motor such as jockey pulley if it has one, sensors / t/stats, pcb. If under a warranty you know what is the best thing to do don`t you?November 5, 2023 at 8:55 pm #488084chrispattison2010
ParticipantHad some spare time yesterday, so completely took the machine apart, and couldn’t see anything wrong anywhere. Gave it a good clean and put it all back together and it’s still doing the same. Will start a cycle but then after a random amount of time it will just stop, screen just shows the time remaining and stays on that time, sometimes after a bit it will carry on the cycle and then stop again, sometimes it will pause itself, when I press play it will sometimes carry on working for a bit, and other times it wont. It’s out of warranty, I didn’t ‘activate’ the 5 year warranty so I only got the standard 2 years which has now passed! I suppose the only way is to start throwing parts at it, assuming a part I buy and fit doesn’t fix the problem, could that part be returned – motor, pcb etc?

ParticipantWell, when you took the machine to pieces did the motor have a black plastic terminal block with the wires in a line? -= the centrifugal switch. If so that is a motor switch box and contains cam and switches and this is the area they apparently screw up by the switch contacts getting stuck together or/ and the plastic moulding burns internally = motor stops = fault code.
Throwing money at it given the price of the parts is not a good idea: “assuming a part I buy and fit doesn’t fix the problem, could that part be returned – motor, pcb etc?” Doubt they would take stuff back based on trial and error as they are in business and not part libraries – I do not know of any company would do that – and certainly not pcboards hence guessing not a good idea! Would be a good idea to have taken a photo of the motor`s terminal block so at least we could either discount that or not.November 6, 2023 at 9:30 am #488086chrispattison2010
ParticipantI unplugged the wires going into the motor, but nothing looked damaged/melted there. I’ll post some pics I took of the motor. After searching the part number on the motor I can get hold of a new genuine Samsung one for £88, so tempted to try it at that price? When trying a cycle last night, after it stopped and paused itself a couple of times it did bring up another 3C error again. Thanks, Chris

ParticipantFixpart spares is now back on line. Google fixpart and see that the motor mentions module in its description (though the whole thing is still somewhat unclear ) maybe I `ve been on the wrong track there again maybe not.

ParticipantIs it worth taking the motor apart and looking inside?
https://shop.digicare.co.uk/products/dc31-00184e-motor-bldc-for-samsung-washing-machine
This looks like the exact same motor, and the code matches the code on my motor, just alot cheaper than the fix part and other websites.

ParticipantNothing like the motor that is in the video but then that was a guess based on no information being available at the time other than your model number which yielded absolutely zippo from the normal places. With a picture via this Fixpart spares dealer of the correct motor (fixpart had intially been off line for ages) and no motor references to your model number seemingly elsewhere at the time, your picture just confirms that I doubt that is the problem least from this centrifugal switch problem because it appears you haven`t got that BUT in the description of the motor it does mention the word “module” giving the impression that the white plastic motor terminal box could be something more than what it first seems, in other words I think that terminal block might not just be a terminal block directly to the stator coils – you`d have to dismantle the motor further to check that – because It could be the equiv of a hall sensor = a module term = hall sensor failure famed on LG and Samsung washing machines can give the symptoms you have but there is no info available least to me other than what has been mentioned for your Samsung under the motor discription i.e. the word “module” which it would be. Just a thought that might be the case, impossible to know that given the low amount of info and zero experience on your t/dryer. If that is the case then we might be on the right tracks. (perhaps they had loads of previous problems with the mechanical switch and re-engineered the later models to work in a different way, but that is impossible to know unless you work for Samsung)
Another component that would could cause this is a motor relay on the pcboard or its soldering and so perhaps that is where the problem really lies i.e. at the other end i.e. the pcb. All the Samsung stuff I have ever worked on, before I retired last year, which were mostly washing machines, the components are potted in a jelly resin making visually ID of duff offending components but especially the soldering on the reverse of the board a major challenge if not impossible without risk of a disaster cutting the plastic away – not made to be repaired just to be replaced – but replacing that pcb is one expensive gamble and is the last thing you would normally change. Presume your pcb/s are potted too.
And yes Fixpart parts are not cheap but least we got a description of the part in some terms which was the point and you tracked down a replacement motor. If you do buy a new motor for 80 quid to try that will of course be your desicion because that might not cure the problem but then on the other hand, it might. But then something has to be tried!
If the replacement motor does cure the fault then of course great! If it does no such thing I will admit defeat being out of my experience.November 15, 2023 at 10:03 am #488091chrispattison2010
ParticipantUPDATE – so I took out the motor run capacitor and tested that to make sure that wasn’t the issue, and that was fine. The new motor arrived and i installed that yesterday and that seems to of sorted the issue. So there must be some module/control board in there that has failed. The tumble dryer has completed 3 cycles now without stopping so it’s looking very promising 🙂

ParticipantExcellent news. Well looks like the motor has some sort of electronic device within the moulded plastic terminal block. So long as it now works, which it now seems to consistantly do, then it has been cured. Thank the Gods for that !!

ParticipantSeems to be working fine again now

ParticipantJust wondering if this new motor has remained working for you?
I have had the same problem with my Samsung dryer.January 2, 2024 at 7:15 am #488095andyjawa
ParticipantPhil.collins. Is it the same model though? Is it a heat pump dryer? There appear to be be several visually differing motors. So what is your full model number?

I can’t find any error on mine dryer. And i want to test your solution.
Thank you!Best Regards from Germany
