This Scandinova chest freezer came with the house and it works fine. the only problem is that it ices up around the lid. Has the seal gone? Where could I get another one? thanks for any advice.

Hi Joanna is it snow like frost or like solid ice?

    Its solid ice

If it’s solid ice and not powdery at all it’s more likely to be moisture as opposed to air getting in.

I assume you have no idea of the age of the machine? Is it in a garage or shed??

Its in the garage attached to the house. No, I really don’t know how old it is. Probably very.

From what you’ve said here I’d take a guess at the fault being insulation failure. This is where the insulation, a foam, breaks down and fills with condensation (moisture) and leads to almost no insulation of hot (outside) to cold (inside). Inevitably this leads to moisture forming on the inside of the cavity and it forms big chunks of smooth clear ice normally.

As a general rule this is regarded as unrepairable. Not that it can’t be done but usually by the time it occurs it’s simply not worth trying due to the age of the appliance and the cost to do it, if you can get to the affected area at all. It’s also not a repair that most will warranty as there’s not a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} success rate on this type of repair.

Not good news, but hope it helps.

The seals for these lids are moulded to the lid so it would mean a complete lid ass which would come costly.

Bearing in mind where the appliance is situated the appliance could run quite happily for a long while yet,you just need to knock off the excess ice every few weeks.

Any moisture that may go onto the floor will dry up naturally.

I have know the famous hotpoibt fridge freezers with insulation breakdown going on for 6-8 yrs after they have statred to show ice on the underneath outside of the unit,So in my opinion there wouldnt be any mad rush to replace this unit.

Thank you very much all. I will do as suggested an keep knocking the ice off and hang on to it a bit longer.
