Schreiber APM 6314 integrated fridge problem

Hi, thanks for reading. Can anyone identify this problem?:

Fridge never goes down to the required cold temperature, ice forms very quickly on the element at the back in one big area.

Is it a relatively cheap repair? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, I think the motor DOES run continuously.

Most likely a system fault, ice blocks never a good sign with R134a gas, compressor running too hot compounds the problem. How old is this appliance?

The appliance is approximately eight years old.

sounds like the compressor is worn out SSW, beyond economical repair. Although its not a spring chicken at 8 years old, its still not that old…you need to check that the correct ventilation has been arranged in the housing.
Most require a large vent slot in the kick panel of the kitchen unit (can be covered with a decor grill) which allows air to travel under the appliance, up the rear of it (collecting the warmth of the appliance) and out through the top of the housing…bit like a chimney effect. Time and time again i see frs and fzs with no ventilation provided and they wheeze on for a few years before the compressor gets tired, by which time the installers are long gone.
All this will apply to your new machine too of course.

just an after thought…..is the ice hard or is it snowy?….if its snowy then you might just have an airleak from worn/broken hinges

Hmmm. The fridge has a vent at the bottom but not at the top so there is no chimney effect. The ice is a hard block and not snowy.

Anyone got any idea how much a new compressor should cost for this fridge? Not too much ££££ I hope. 😥

no need to worry about the top…if the kitchen units don’t touch the ceiling then there is sufficient space behind the housing (built in to their design) and the warm air will just rise up behind and up towards the ceiling.
…as to replacing the compressor…well it is the main event in any cooling product, it requires major surgery to replace (gas tight connections need to be braized or crimped) and then a fresh charge of coolant gas installed. The cost of the compressor depends on its size but it will certainly not be a cheap repair!

hi,

Please check if this has R134a refrigerant ..look on the label usually hidden by the salad draws.

If it is, call it a day would be my advice. The chance of a system blockage is very high, too high to repair an 8 year old appliance.

Yeah, the label says R134a, and I guess because there is a big build-up of ice in one area at the back of my knackered fridge it would point to some sort of blockage, like you say.

Thanks for the link to a newer model. I wonder how much the CW781 would be… any ideas?
