ParticipantHi all,
I have a Schreiber Refrigerator model number APP6302 and it’s just started freezing up on the back wall. It’s as though it’s not switching off when the temperature drops low enough. I’ve checked the door seal, and it seems to be OK (there are no visible holes or gaps etc).
Could anyone please tell me whether this is likely to be caused by the thermostat – if so, can I test the existing thermostat before I purchase a replacement? (I’m a dab-hand with a multimeter!) If not, what’s the recommend list of components to replace?
Many thanks for your help. With kind regards,
Jaime

Yes, almost certainly the thermostat that has failed and the thermostat used on that fridge is this one:

Hello again.
I’ve received the new thermostat in the post and I’ve noticed that its phial/capillary is about 7 inches longer than on the old thermostat. Is this a problem?
Also, before I attempt to fit the new thermostat, does anyone know whether I should just feed it through the hole that the old capillary came out of, or is it recommended to remove some outer or inner panels to help guide the phial/capillary to its correct location?
Again, thank you for any help you can offer. With kind regards,
Jaime

The thermostat capillary needs to be fed down the hole until it stops any remaining capillary needs to be bent carefully to fit inside of the box/thermostat housing do not bend it to much or you will lose the gas inside of the capillary then the thermostat is no good. If you bend it around your finger so it has no sharp bends and support where it joins on to the stat so you do not break it off the stat you should be o.k.
Try to lose the excess lenth near the front of the housing away from the electrics.
It is worth checking the fan motor at the bottom front left of the fridge as sometimes the plastic box can fall apart and stop the fan this can cause the fridge to freeze.
You have to take the fan off and the box can be cliped together again if it has fallen apart be carefull as the fan motor will be hot.hope this helps

I forgot to add if you find the fan has fallen apart it still pays to replace the stat as you will find the stat will fail in a short time after a fan fault if it has not already failed.

Hi all,
I’ve replaced the thermostat and I’ve now tested the fridge for a few days. Unfortunately, the problem is still there i.e. I now have a lot of ice on the top six inches of the inside back wall of the fridge. Is there anything else that’s not too expensive to replace, or would I be better advised to just get a new fridge? I can pull the whole thing out and check the pipework at the back if it would help. (I checked the fan and it’s fine).
Thanks again for any help you can offer. Kind regards,
Jaime

If it is only frosting on the top six inches it sounds like it is low on gas or a compressor not pumping right if it is an older fridge it may be better to buy new as this is not a DIY job. If you decide to repair then try Repairs at on this site for your nearest repairer.
