After successfully separating a plastic drum to replace the bearings, I found that the oem (AEG) has used shielded bearings. I know there is an additional seal in front of the bearing but I’m all for belt in braces so as an engineer I would have thought sealed would be better especially the most exposed front bearing. So my question is do they spec the best bearing for the job or go with the cheapest. Rubber shielded bearings are slightly harder to rotate is this a consideration for the motor spec.

most of the time they use a rubber shielded bearing behind the seal. Its no problem to the motor as its made to move 7kg of dry washing that a lot heavier when wet

also a lot of sealed drum don’t seem to have the bleed hole between the seal and the front bearing. this allows any moisture that did leak past the seal to drain away so as not to contaminate the bearing

as for the bearings they don’t have to be top of the range but I have found some of the really cheap ones are noisy so I tend to stay clear

Many thanks for your reply Dave, think I’ll try sealed in the front bearing as that’s the one that failed the rear bearing was fine. Luckily I have a wide choice of bearings foc.
