you have to look at what you have already

what are you earing per month then assuming 6 weeks holiday multiply by 13.5 then divide by 12. you may not get this much money but if your self employed and you take a holiday you do not get paid so you have to earn enough to pay for this

you then have expenses. your own van and its expenses insurance, tax, servicing and a replacement every so often. Plus your insurance, accountancy fees etc
true these expenses can be claimed against tax but you still have to earn the money to pay for it

you are also putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak as if you friends work dries up then so does yours. in my case if I lose one customer then my worlds does no collapse

also as you say its Scotland so does that means lots of miles which could mean travelling time and delays. could this mean you may not get through 8 jobs and will you get paid less ?

8 jobs a day, 5 days a week, equates to 40 jobs a week, at around £14-£15 per job. Not an attractive prospect in my book, even if he covers all your expenses.

Thanks for the reply stratfordgirl…it’s all starting to look less of an inviting prospect the more I speak to folks who have went self employed..

Its been years since I,ve had eight jobs a day. In over forty years in this job I bought my house and raised two kids but now I,m just about hanging in waiting for retirement. Probably a case of the job stopping before I do. To be honest if I were twenty years younger and fitter this job would be a big no no.
This is just my opinion and I wish you well whatever you decide but I now know that the older you get the harder it becomes to compete against the younger generation should you need to change career course.

Wilf just make sure you have a decent pension for when you retire, the only pensions I know that rise year on year are the State, Police, Fire Service, NHS etc. I know that as I have a few friends and acquaintances that used to be in these, and they boast about the amount of income they have and pay rises.
