ParticipantA few weeks ago when putting the shopping away I noticed that the very bottom of the freezer compartment was covered in a layer of ice. I got rid of it and loaded the shopping and thought no more of it.
Also, the fan had seemed to be getting noisier than normal. This morning, The fridge compartment did not feel cold. The freezer still appeared to be frozen so I was expecting to find 2 compressors.
Came home from work and found freezer still to be cold and fridge warm.Pulled appliance out and cleaned it all up around the back. Single compressor with R600a sticker on it.
Am a sparky by trade and used to fix appliances but never really worked on freezer units.
Have supply to the unit. Supply goes from compressor up to top of fridge and cable disappears inside. Have 2 more cables coming down behind unit to what looks like a PCB.
The compressor has a white wire to it that looks as though its connected to an overheat device but I could be wrong. Should there be 240v at this terminal as there isnt at the mo!
Are there any checks I can do myself electrically wise before I feel the need to call in a refridgeration engineer?
Where should I have supply to?
TIA.

After reading a little on here, stripped out the freezer section to find it completely solid with ice across the bottom! must be 3 inches square right across the width of the unit…..defrosting now!
i assume a drain hole must have got plugged up somewhere. Also, there are alot of very small balls of insulation in there…polystyrene perhaps…found that in the drain spout above the compressor also…..

After defrosting the beast…supposed to be frost free….plugged it back in and it seems to be working.
Minor niggle is the fan is now fouling somewhere and makes a noise on startup and when it stops. Will pull back cover of freezer off again tomorrow to see if I can find where its catching. Have noticed its enough to stop the fan from running in certain positions…a slight rock gets it going but thats no good! lol

😀
Fridge is cold, freezer is freezing!
Just need to check out the fan and where its catching.
Are the fans serviceable units or is it best to just replace whilst Im at it?

Hi, Jotto.. if you have a shufty around the site, you’ll find that a “frost free” that ices up, is usually suffering from a dying temp. sensor
keep an eye on it, if ice starts to build again, you will need a new thermistor (assuming that it’s electronic control and not a mechanical thermostat.
re-the fan,- plasyic ones can be bent by the ice-buildup…you may be able to soften it with boiling water and reset the shape…metal ones, just bend gently. Needless to say, fan must spin freely. -
