ParticipantMoved into a new house and machine is in a shed. Pipework froze up. Now cleared it and the washer fills and starts to agitate but then the machine and the timer stop. I’ve checked the pressure switch tube and thats clear. If I move the timer one ‘click’ it will continue the cycle but the water doesnt get hot. I’m getting continuity across the two thermostats but nothing across the heater. When its in the ‘heat’ position I’m getting continuity to both live and neutral mains terminals from those at the heater (obviously I’ve got the machine powered off at this points). I think the heater has had it so I have 2 questions:
1. Is the heater element being down stopping the timer?
2. The heater element has a blue tip which may be a cut-out : should this re-set itself or do I have to physically put it back in?
Any help appreciatedDecember 26, 2009 at 8:16 pm #307173Penguin45

Heater should read approx 25 ohms. The blue sleeve contains a one-shot thermal safety device, so the heater will have to be replaced if there is no circuit.
You need to check the water level control system, especially the airbell in the bottom hose for blockages.
Replacement element is HERE.

Many thanks for the help. There is no circuit across the heater and I’ve ordered one from the link you provided. I couldnt really see how you could reset the cut-out once it tripped and I appreciate the confirmation its a one time only part. I dont have a manual for the machine so will do a search to find out what the airbell looks like and check the hoses while I’m waiting for the part to arrive. The washer has hot and cold feeds, but both are linked up to cold water. I’m wondering if my assumption that no power across the heater is stopping the timer is correct – if I filled using hot water then the heater wouldnt need to be powered up but the cycle would continue. This may be a Newb trying to run before he can walk but I’d be interested to know 🙂December 27, 2009 at 12:24 am #307175Penguin45

Static heat on these older ones. Fill to level 1, tumble to heat position – all stops ’til temperature is reached. You can often hear the element “kettling” whilst the machine is heating.
Air bell runs off the side of the drum to filter hose – tip the machine back to have a look.
Power off first, of course.

Update: New element arrived safely and had first chance to fit it today. The old element was secured in place by a rubber fitting – much like a rubber grommet – and was a real pain to remove. When it came to fitting the new one, I couldnt get the flange to seat flat against the back of the drum. The tip of the element was clearly touching the drum inside. The old element may be longer but the angles are the same. I can only conclude that I bent the opening where the element fits when I took the old one out. I wasnt too happy with the way the drum bounced about on fast spin anyway so have ordered a new machine. Well it was worth and shot. Many thanks to the board and Penguin45 in particular
