Fitted new bearing kit and door seal to this machine and now the drum is squeaking as it rubs the edge of the seal. The bearing kit and seal were pattern (Invicta) parts so I suppose the seal may differ slightly from the original. The drum shaft seemed to be a tight fit in the bearings so it is possible that it has not pulled through fully but I don’t want to tighten the nut too much in case it breaks the spindle thread. I had a job getting the spindle out of the old bearings so I suppose this is normally tight. I have had this problem once or twice before with new door seals and have sometimes resorted to removing the seal and cutting off excess rubber. Is there a trade secret for dealing with intransigent door seals? 😕

I find the inner bearing surface of the shaft and the new bearing can be a very tight interference fit, causing the difficulty in mating the two parts.

I usually wire wool the shaft ( not the water seal collar)before fitting to eliminate the problem. Don’t have the problem with new shafts, only when the existing is used.

Hi this door seal catching is quite common even with the genuine door seal – I usually run the machine on spin with no water in and let the edge of the tub chop off the excess. On the subject of tight shafts if you get stuck the spider is available as a seperate item – although its not advertised by Servis as being avail. If you want further info PM me.

Once I’d done a rinse & spin it seemed free enough so the machine is now back with the customer. It was not down to the bearing seal thickness as the bronze bush did not fully penetrate the seal. The shaft surfaces looked very good but the rear bearing was a bit loose in its housing so I stuck it in with loctite.

Hey Charlieboy, cool it a bit. Kevin was only suggesting cleaning up the drum shaft, removing rust, burrs, pitts etc. I am sure you agree that that is normal practice, personally I use emery cloth but what the heck.
As for this problem, i usually remove the backplate again and re-fit it as Its often an alighnment problem, common on Philco’s in the past.

Sorry, I misread the bit about the tub seal. 😳 I never bother renewing these, i just use silicone on the old one but if anything that should bring the drum further back rather than forward, although most of it gets squeezed out anyway.

Since I do a lot of work for servis I was interested on what was being said, please always use a new seal and pull the inner drum right back by putting the pulley retaining nut on about 3-4 turns and slip the spanner edge between , making sure that the drum is all the way back this will stop any damage to the door seal. I also use a little silicone grease on the bearing seal that stops any sqealling.
