Well to replace the bearings you remove the whole backplate having release the ‘barrel clamp ring’. But the scraping noise is a little scary? Clapped out bearings usually make horrible rubbling noises? Are you sure its not just something caught between the inner and outer drum like a bra wire for example??

I have often found scraping noises to be bra underwires and bent heaters.
examine the drum of the machine for any dents scrapes sharp points etc.
if you find a groove all the way around then this may be the damage caused by a heater or a coin etc, if there is a bra underwire caught then 9 times out of ten you can feel it poking throguh the holes in the drum.September 22, 2006 at 1:12 pm #189352bro

OK,got an engineer out for a quote,he said the bearings had gone and wanted £130 to do it,how hard would it be for me to do it and what tools would i need and what would it entail,do i need to take the drum ou or can it be done without taking it out
thanx in advanceOctober 3, 2006 at 12:54 pm #189354bro

The writing is on the wall mate….do yourself a favour on this one…..
Chuck it in the skip and get a new machine….preferrably NOT a Servis!!!!! 😉

I agree with Martin on this one, the engineers quote of £130 was probably very good and I would imagine it was the engineers intention to replace the back plate and bearings as a complete assembly. It’s what I would do, the bearings and seals on a lot of Servis machines can be a bit of a nightmare to remove without the right tools resulting in damage to the back plate. Furthermore, you won’t know what condition the Drum shaft is in until the back plate is removed, if that requires replacement, cost of parts alone, almost = new machine. 🙁

cheers for the replies,,stil thinking of replacing bearing, the engineer wanted £130 for just doing them,,,would it be hard just to do them…i mean it costs about £15 for a new set of bearings, surely it must be worth a try to save my mother some of her pension lol

i would charge just under a hundred for that job but the price is fair the work is arduous, and the “barrel clamp” is a nightmare the shaft can be worn even though you may not think so upon inspection so changing the bearings would just be a temporary measure.
servis are not good machines have a scan through these forums for our opinions on said appliance then see if your mother would be better with a better machine i know the initial outlay is a lot but buying a good brand reccomended by an engineer on this site would save more of her pension in years to come. as you may do the repair and have a module fault next week, at least with a new machine comes a new guarantee:)there are many good machines out there and a lot of rubbish just research what you get and ask for our opinion on the model you intend to buy as we ARE IMPARTIAL.
we cannot give a step by step guide on doing the repair but we can answer specific questions for you.
but as i said in my opinion get shut buy another:)October 3, 2006 at 6:41 pm #189360bro

a hundred quid is a significant chunk towards a new machine..cheers DDSDDS i know what your saying m8 and respect your knowledge,i repaired a washing machine years ago, same problem(bearings)it wasnt too hard to do,the only problem i had was getting the barrell clamp back on because it seemed to small, the bolt that went through didnt seem long enough when fitting it back on.if u know what i mean, have you got any tips on getting that back on as i am going to take a gamble,i know you all are saying i am wasting my time but i just have been layed of so i have got plenty,,,,thanx fo your knowledge
