ParticipantHi, hope you can help.
I have a Servis M6500W washing machine that is just over one year old. It has become very noisy when on maximum spin and vibrates a lot. On close inspection the drum seems to have plenty of ‘travel’ in it when I physically push it downwards and sideways. I took the back off the machine and found that the gas strut/dampers put up very little resistance whatsover to any downwards or sideways pressure I put on the drum.
Do you think I am on the right lines by saying I need to replace the gas struts or maybe get them re-gassed? Are they easy to replace? How much do they cost? Or could it be something else totally?!!
Thanks in advance. 🙂

Gas struts – I wish…… 😆 They are just friction dampers and they do wear. P/no 499023500 – an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for prices and ordering.
Do yourself one favour first – empty the filter. It chokes up over time and will cause the drum to bounce all over the place when it ramps up into spin.

Thanks for the quick reply Penguin45.
I emptied the filter at the front of the machine, there was a bit of debris in there but not much. Do you agree the friction dampers are the likely cause of the excessive vibration and noise?
I’ve sent an email for prices.
Cheers

This article is worth a read.
I’d check that the concrete blocks are secure (thudding noises), and that the sink coupling (if applicable) is clear. Bearings wearing generates noise (rumbling), as can a broken drum support (clattering). Heater flapping can generate a noise like a machine gun. Beyond that, there’s not much else but the dampers, which is certainly the easiest fix.
They should work like car shockers – one bounce only.

It is rare for these dampers to fail so early. Drum bearing failure is more likely. If you hold the outer drum from moving then check for up and down movement on the inner drum you should get very little movement unless the bearings have failed. Also slowly rotate the inner drum by hand and check for notchy movement or rumbling. Another telltale sign of drum bearing failure is rusty staining down the back of the outer drum.

Thanks for the help guys.
I’ve checked for excessive play between the two drums, there is about 1mm of play, that’s all. There is no notchy movement or rumbling.
I’ve inspected the dampers again, there is a quite a lot of grease coming out of one of them, by looking at the grease mark on the shaft there is evidence of about 30mm of travel in that particular damper.
The concrete weights are secure, nothing looks broken, I’m not sure what you mean by ‘sink coupling’.

Some people connect the drain hose to a spigot under the sink instead of an open drain pipe. The spigots are notorious for getting choked and restricting the out flow of water.

Oh right, this machine drains to an open pipe which seems all clear.

I have investigated further!
After having taken the back off the machine and taken the belt off, I turned the flywheel by hand to rotate the drum. If I put my ear close to the drum at the back, I can hear a dreaded slight crunching sound coming from the bearing area – it certainly isn’t a smooth gliding sound that you would expect from an unworn bearing set.
Which brings me on to the next question – can these bearings actually be replaced? It’s a Servis M6500W and it looks like a sealed drum to me.
Guys, does it sound like I’ve got a big white shiny piece of landfill sitting in my utility room? 😥

Looking in online parts catalogues it looks like the tub splits down the middle. There is a bearing kit listed, Part No. 750224400. Perhaps later versions of this model do have welded tubs?
