ParticipantInherited this when buying a narrow boat. Previous owner says it was working but it is dead. There is power at the socket, checked the plug fuse, checked the double-pole on-off switch, replaced the door interlock switch. Can’t see anything disconnected or charred inside. What should I try next? Replacing it would be a nightmare.

Have you got continuity from your live & neutral at the plug, to either side of your mains suppressor..?
This is attached directly at the end of the mains cable… If not there’s your problem…

Don’t check anything with power connected. Zap!

Do you have any power light illuminated at all on the machine?
If not I’d check continuity down to the interlock. If that’s ok then you probably have a fault in the main power board. Or maybe a loose connection there…. Time to call a qualified engineer then!Sorry I cannot go in to further detail with this..

Is the interlock switch a straightforward changeover switch or is it more complicated than that? Trying to check the new one and getting myself confused.

This machine had a common fault with resistor R1 on the board going open cct causing the machine to appear dead.

I see now how the interlock switch works – live incoming to pin 3 neutral on pin 1 and the switch operates (if the door is closed) and you get live out of pin 2. I’m not getting neutral continuity to pin 1 though – where does this neutral feed come from? Presumably a sensor that says if there is still water in the machine?
