The fault that I have with my washing machine sounds similar to that reported by “knothobber” on 20 Oct 2009, but I do not appear to see an answer that resolved the fault.

From my description below is there anyone that can advise me what might be causing the problem with my washing machine and what I can check for next?

My washing machine does not work when a wash cycle is selected, but it does work when the gentle and fast spin cycles are selected.

When I select a wash cycle you can hear a humming noised every so many seconds indicating that power is getting to the motor and if the pulley on the back of the drum is manually turned then the motor cuts in and turns the drum.

    Background:-

The initial problem I had with the washing machine was that it was flashing F4 indicating a motor fault.

I replaced the carbon brushes as they had worn down, but this did not completely stop F4 from flashing, then I heard an unusual noise at the end of a spin cycle and the washing machine stopped working completely.

I removed the motor and found that one of the carbon brushes had been arcing within its brass holder and it had started to melt the brass holder, also the thermal cut out had blown, which probably explains the noise that I heard.

I have since replaced the thermal cut out and carbon brushes but the motor still does not work correctly.

I therefore tried to get hold of a direct replacement Servis motor, but as I could not get hold of one, I fitted a second hand motor from a Hotpoint washing machine.

Prior to fitting the motor I changed the order of the field winding and carbon brush terminals in the multi plug connector to match that of the old Servis motor and tested it was working ok on the bench. I also had the motor PCB repaired and tested, as it had become damaged when the motor failed.

I have also tried replacing the pressure switch, the ribbon cable that goes from the main program PCB to the motor PCB, the main program PCB itself with a new one, the motor PCB with a new one and another motor from a Hotpoint washing machine, but all to no avail.

still sound like a motor fault

i dont think the hotpoint motors are a straight swap for these. from memory think the tacho had a resistor across it on the plug and the motor pulley was different. check resistances from your old motor to see if things mactch

these motors always seemed to stuggle to start and i last saw one about 12 months ago. have just discarded 3 or 4 prog boards that i found in my attic. dont think i have anymore but will look

    Hi Dave,
You certainly have a good memory and have helped me immensely, as the old Servis motor did have a resistor between the terminals of the tacho.

I removed the Hotpoint motor from the washing machine and checked out the resistances between the two motors and they looked to be similar.

I then removed the tacho assembly from the old Servis motor and re-fitted it to the Hotpoint motor, then fitted it back onto the washing machine and low and behold the washing machine now appears to work again !

Thank you very much for you expert help it is really appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Nigel.
