The machine was in the flat when we moved in so we have no idea of its age, but has worked well for the last 2 years!
Last night I set it to wash a load of smoke stained towels- don’t ask! – and during the initial wash cycle, when the cylinder is filling, a large amount of water cascaded out of the powder tray. I’m guessing that there is a blockage betwixt the tray and the cylinder….but how the hell do I clear it? Or is there another possible cause?

Unplug first! You will need to remove the drawer to see whats happening. Take off the lid of the machine and reach down beneath the soap drawer housing to the rubber hose that goes from drawer to outer drum. Give the hose a squeeze and there will probably be something hard inside. Usually it is a lump of solidified soap powder. You may be able to manipulate the hard lump upwards into the drawer housing or into the drum. Sometimes you can dissolve the blockage by pouring very hot water into the soap drawer housing with the drawer removed.

Once again many thanks for your help, Phidom!
