One of those Sods Law days? I’ve been doing a drum spider change on a Zanussi Jetsystem and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. It’s one of those jobs where the customer has stated that my initial estimate is her upper spending limit. If I find more problems, resulting in a higher bill, she will cut her losses and buy a new machine. In such cases I often end up doing the extra work for no extra charge, rather than lose the job.
When I got it apart I found the inner drum had cut right through the front half of the tub. I had got a secondhand tub so I replaced the front half. This meant transferring the door seal and concrete from the customers machine. I removed the seal without noting exactly where it fits. 😳 There is an arrow showing the top of the tub front but no corresponding mark on the door seal. I tried to judge 180 degrees from said mark and tried to position the drain groove of the seal accordingly. Needless to say, I managed to get it a few degrees out so the drain groove does not work too well.
There was lots of plastic swarf everywhere and I tried to get as much as I could out but some was still in hoses, filter housing etc. When the machine was back together the jetsystem jet was not working. I took off the circulation pump and cleaned that out but that only cured the fault for a few seconds. I guessed that there was probably a blockage in the coupling to the door seal as that is the most restrictive part. I didn’t want to dismantle that though as it has single-use hose clips and I don’t have any spares. I decided to try blasting the hose through with mains water. I managed to rig up a hosepipe to the bottom of the Jetsystem hose but then had the problem of catching the water, as I would otherwise flood the workshop, due to the missing hose on the circulation pump. I wedged an old ice cream tub under the Jetsystem jet and tried a quick blast with the mains water. I suppose the water came out at a more horizontal angle than normal due to the higher pressure so most of it still missed the ice cream tub and ended up on the floor. 😆August 26, 2009 at 5:12 pm #295496rolf

That all sounds like fun.Its after jobs like that you are praying your next call is a hotpoint wm series not spinning. 😆

If its any comfort phidom, i think ive went through an almost identical series of events at least ten times in the last few years. When i find the carnage caused by these bloody people running their machines for MONTHS with duff bearings (or “just a few washes” according to them :rolls: ) i feel like screaming in their ear ARE YOU BLOODY DEAF??!!
Thats not allowed unfortunately 🙁

Two jobs today
Built in Ariston dishwasher..had a new cycling pump but when I pulled it out wonderful kitchen fitters had squashed drain hose and it had been leaking for 8 years so had to order a new hose.
Second job…noisy Hotpoint WMA. Made up rear half and got old tub out to split. Bearings completely disintegrated, spider shaft knackered and the ally bearing housing had split in two and came away with the spider. Just a £20 call out…Same as Madmac, only noisy for a week :rolls:
Deaf bleeders so instead of £100 it has cost him £300 for a new machine + my £20. Couldn’t wait for a ISE so off to Currys.
Serves him right

im new to posting on here, but i know the feeling.
this happened in october last year;
a lady rang me on saturday afternoon about her daughters washing machine not pumping out, ok poss blockage, she is desperate, do it sunday afternoon, plans for going to the beach with the doggy out the window.
told her the usual on the phone; £20 callout and £30 labour = £50 cash and no bouncy cheques which also take a week to clear at the bank when i get the chance to make the 20 mile all round trip to get there!
anyway; rang her sunday morning told the mother (never got the chance to speak to the daughter) ill be there between 12 noon and 3 pm.
after finishing off my paperwork for the week, got in the car 1pm set sat nav to destination; quickest way was by single track roads taking 1 hour to arrive, no signal on phone during journey. (i live in the sticks and calls are long distances between each other and time consuming, hence the charges; petrol at its cheapest in this area being approx 9p per litre dearer than the citys)
got to my destination at 2pm, only to find no answer at the door. by this time i was boiling. i rang the mother on her phone who told me she will be 5 minutes to let me in. as her daughter got sick of waiting in so went off to see her boyfriend. i waited 15 minutes still no mother to let me in the house. i said bollocks to this, im away home. as i was going away out the drive, the mother was coming up the driveway. i said stuff it and i gone home. i felt like sending them my 20 callout bill, but i should of turned around when the mother arrived. or not phoned her and put the bill through the door when i didnt get an answer. better still, sohuld of sayed in bed and took my dog down the beach for 2hrs 30 mins it would of made him happy.
lesson learned; always be aware of someone else booking a call on behalf of a cutomer callout. next time i will want to speak to the spoilt daughter or whoever i am doing the work for.
i hope when they rang my competition on monday morning, they had to wait a week for someone coming out and i hope they got their eyeballs ripped out.
result; 2 hours driving, over bumpy roads, wrecking my car, adding up the miles, burning fuel, and above all, a waste of a day i could of had for myself to spend time with my dog.March 23, 2010 at 1:54 am #295500torxhead

let me tell you a story i think is funny and i hope it will cheer you all up who have had a bad day, lol
in 1989, i was in the ta when i was self employed repairing and selling reconditioned washing machines.
i had a bedford ce van.
one early sunday frosty morning, i jumped into my van to go to the ta. my van had 6 reconditioned washing machines in, packed tightly, so i didnt tie them down. i had spent all week reconditioning them, with drum bearings etc.
as i was driving fast to the ta centre, i hit a patch of ice, and whey, i was away, hit a post, back doors flew open, and all my washing machines were bouncing along the road.
i eventually came to a stop, taking down a 30ft stretch of high fencing.
i tried to get out, but my door was stuck and the front wing and offside was all damaged.
a policeman came along after a nice lady rang them to tell them what had happened.
i eventualy got unstuck and back on the road, after kicking my wing away from the wheel.
the policeman told me to get the washers off the road, so i did, put them back in the van, he took my details, then i set off to the ta centre.in short;
should of stayed in bed that day. for the sake of queen and country and £25 per day ta wage;
washing machines were scrap
was sent a bill of £250 for the fence repair
good news was, the van i sold after putting dints in for £700 when i purchased it for £300 prior to the dints.
the annoying thing about it was, the gritter wagon appeared when i was in the police car.lesson learned; options
1. stay in bed and stuff the game of playing soldiers
2. strap washing machines in at all times
3. when you go into a fence, make sure no one has saw you and get away as quick as possible
4. if you dont your van, give it a lick of hammerite and sell it for more to make up for your losses.
thats 2 sundays in 20 years, will have to watch what i get upto on a sunday.
maybe i should start going to church instead???March 23, 2010 at 11:18 am #295501A1TEC

I had my boiler serviced today, I knew he was coming and removed surrounding bits and pieces and left room for him too work, took me arouns 3 minutes.
Sooo why dont people take there crap from under the sink or from in front of, or the surrounding area before I arrive.
Drives me mad.
Everyday. 😡

man, i feel for you!!!
I had one of those days myself a few weeks back…. Job 1, had to walk over grass to get to house door, yep, dog sh*t. Did I notice until I was in the customers kitchen? No!
On the way to job 2, fill car up with petrol. So the pump doesnt cut out and a surge of petrol fills up my shoes as it shoots out of the filling pump and gushes down my legs!
So then I quickly nip into a pay and display car park, no change in my pockets (stinking of petrol and dog sh*t, i might add). “never mind”, i thought, “I’ll only be two minutes”. Two minutes long enough for an over jelous power trippin £80 car parking fine!!!
Fortunately the next day was better…

Only jesting Lee……I know what you mean with people leaving crap all over the place. You can spend more time sorting there kitchen out than doing the job.
But on the other hand you get the really clean ones who spray bleach in your face as soon as you pull the machine out.
You just carn’t win sometimes. 😥 -
