ParticipantHi
I could do with some advice about my siemens washer dryer. It is just over 5 years old and outside the guarantee. It cost us £770, as was bought as an expensive, supposedly long lived purchase after about 3 previous washer dryers had all given up the ghost within a couple of years each. We have no room anywhere for a separate washer and dryer.
The machine is now making a huge noise and the dryer selector switch has broken so the dryer cannot be turned off and is constantly set at 70 minutes, needing the machine to be manually turned off at the right time to stop the dryer starting.
I called an engineer out and he looked at the outside, told me replacing the selector switch would cost upward of £150 and then moved the drum with his hands, and let drop the bad news that the bearings were going hence the noise. At no time did he turn the machine on let alone get it working. I was told the bearings made it uneconomical to repair and a hotpoint model was recommended. I declined to have the switch fixed – not worth it if the machine is dying, paid his £25 fee and sent him on his way.
Can you advise – is repairing the bearings likely to be so expensive it would be better to get a machine?
In the light of the fact that I have already had to replace a pump and the dryer heating element, shall I just cut my losses and dump the machine for something else?Since I paid what I thought was a lot of money for a supposedly reliable machine, and it seems I haven’t got one, would I be better in future just buying the local ‘Curry’s ‘ special cheapee and planning on replacement every 18months?
Is this normal for Siemens – I feel rather let down by them – not what I expected from such a ‘good’ name at all. Has anyone else had these sorts of problems or was I just unlucky to get a Friday afternoon job?
Thanks for your advice.

This machine has the cast iron cross-piece on the back of the tub, which makes it one of the easiest bearing jobs in the business – under an hours work.
In what way is the dryer selector broken?

HI
Interesting that the bearings can be so easily fixed! Certainly not what the little man said… Any idea what the replacement parts would cost? Are they easily available?
The selector switch on the fascia just turns and turns but doesn’t connect to anything inside the machine, where the setting is permanently stuck on 70 mins. I’m sure it must be something fairly simple – maybe the thread on a screw perhaps, but £150 for parts just seemed so much to pay if the rest of the machine was knackered.
I’m beginning to think maybe the repairman had another agenda – like I said, all he did was stand and look at it and turn the drum round once. And it was 3pm on a Friday afternoon, and the company does have a large sales outlet on the High street…
Do you think a 2nd opinion would be worth a thought?
thanks for your advice – really appreciated.

I would personally take a second opinion.
Parts are quite pricey for this machine, however i would also personally spend £150 on a machine with the siemens logo than spend whatever it would cost to change for a hotpoint. But even without looking i think £150 for parts alone with your symptoms seems way OTT.

I have had a few where the internal parts of the selector knob have failed. It is available as a spare part, around £8 IIRC. Bearing kit is available HERE.
HTH,

So there you have it, I think penguin sums the price of the parts up for ya! about £40 with p+p.

Thanks people.
Just had a new engineer come in – He says there’s nothing wrong with the bearings, altered the positioning of the pump and made everything quieter, and has ordered a new switch unit. In total, with his call out and time, the job will be about £50.
Can’t say how grateful I am to you and the forum for your help. I’m really not in a position to fork out for a new machine right now, and so relieved I don’t have to.
thanks
